Abstract

Parametric insurance and catastrophe risk transfer instruments use predefined measurable parameters to determine whether a payout is triggered following a specified catastrophic event. The design of the parametric trigger, including the selected index, threshold, measurement location, and trigger conditions, can influence the timing and amount of compensation available after a loss event. Understanding these effects is therefore important for effective catastrophe risk transfer and appropriate actuarial assessment of parametric insurance arrangements. This study will examine the effect of parametric trigger design on catastrophe risk transfer. It will assess how different trigger structures influence the amount and timing of risk transferred from policyholders or risk-bearing entities to insurers and other risk transfer providers.
