Abstract

Pension fund management fees are charges deducted from pension assets or contributions to cover the costs of managing and administering retirement funds. Although such fees may appear relatively small, their continuous deduction over a long contribution period can influence the amount of wealth accumulated by pension contributors at retirement. The study examines the effect of pension fund management fees on retirement wealth, with emphasis on how variations in management charges can affect the long-term accumulation of retirement savings. The study will investigate the relationship between pension fund management fees and the level of retirement wealth accumulated by contributors. It will examine how different fee structures and fee levels influence pension account balances over time. Particular attention will be given to the effect of recurring management charges on investment earnings, contribution accumulation, and the final value of retirement savings. The study will consider factors such as management fee rates, contribution amounts, contribution frequency, investment returns, investment duration, and retirement age. Actuarial accumulation techniques will be applied to estimate retirement wealth under alternative fee assumptions. Comparative and sensitivity analyses will also be used to determine how changes in management fees affect accumulated pension balances and the extent to which investment returns may offset or amplify the effect of these charges. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant secondary data on pension contributions, management fees, investment returns, and accumulated pension balances will be examined. Actuarial calculations, compound accumulation methods, descriptive statistics, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis will be employed to evaluate the relationship between management fees and retirement wealth. Different fee scenarios will be assessed over varying contribution periods to determine their long-term financial effects. The study is expected to reveal that higher pension fund management fees may result in lower accumulated retirement wealth, particularly when such fees are charged consistently over extended periods. It is also expected that the effect of management fees will become more significant as the contribution period increases because deductions reduce the amount of funds available for investment and subsequent compound growth. Lower and more efficiently structured fees may therefore support greater accumulation of retirement wealth. The findings are expected to be useful to pension fund administrators, actuaries, regulators, employers, and pension contributors. The study may assist pension administrators in evaluating the efficiency of their fee structures and help regulators assess the implications of management charges for pension adequacy. It may also help contributors understand the long-term financial consequences of pension fees and encourage greater attention to net investment returns when evaluating retirement savings. The study concludes that pension fund management fees can have a significant influence on the level of retirement wealth accumulated over time. It is therefore recommended that pension fund administrators maintain transparent, reasonable, and efficiently structured fee arrangements while controlling unnecessary administrative expenses. Regulators should also strengthen monitoring of pension charges, while contributors should be provided with clear information on fees and their potential long-term effects on retirement wealth.
