Effect of Policy Benefit Amounts on Life Insurance Premium Rates
Abstract
Life insurance provides financial protection by paying specified benefits upon the occurrence of insured events such as death or policy maturity. The amount of benefit promised under a life insurance policy is an important consideration in actuarial pricing because higher benefit amounts generally expose insurers to larger potential financial obligations. Understanding the relationship between policy benefit amounts and premium rates is therefore important for appropriate life insurance pricing and risk management. This study examines the effect of policy benefit amounts on life insurance premium rates. It will assess how variations in the amount payable under a life insurance policy influence the premiums charged to policyholders. The study will also examine how changes in benefit levels affect the actuarial cost of providing life insurance coverage. The study will focus on factors including policy benefit amounts, premium rates, mortality assumptions, policy duration, interest rate assumptions, and expected claims. Different benefit levels will be analysed to determine their effect on the expected cost of life insurance coverage. Actuarial pricing techniques will be applied to estimate premium rates associated with alternative policy benefit amounts. A quantitative actuarial research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant life insurance policy and mortality data will be analysed using descriptive statistics and actuarial pricing techniques. Present value calculations will be used to estimate expected future benefits, while scenario and sensitivity analyses will compare premium rates under different benefit amounts and valuation assumptions. The study is expected to show that higher policy benefit amounts will generally be associated with higher premium payments because the insurer assumes a greater potential financial obligation. Lower benefit amounts are expected to require lower premiums when other pricing assumptions remain unchanged. The study is also expected to demonstrate that the relationship between benefit amounts and premium rates is influenced by factors such as mortality risk, policy duration, and interest rate assumptions. The study is expected to provide useful information for actuaries, life insurance companies, policyholders, and other stakeholders involved in life insurance pricing. The findings may assist insurers in determining appropriate premium rates for different levels of policy benefits and help policyholders understand how benefit choices influence premium obligations. The study may also contribute to more consistent actuarial pricing practices. The study concludes that policy benefit amounts are an important consideration in determining life insurance premium rates because changes in promised benefits affect the insurer's expected financial obligations. It is therefore recommended that insurers apply appropriate actuarial pricing methods when establishing premium rates for different benefit levels. Mortality, interest rate, and policy duration assumptions should also be regularly reviewed to ensure that premium rates adequately reflect expected insurance costs.
