Effect of Policyholder Fund Values on Unit-Linked Insurance Benefits
Abstract
Unit-linked life insurance products combine insurance protection with investment components, with policyholder benefits linked partly to the value of units held in an investment fund. Changes in the value of policyholder funds can therefore directly influence the amount available to meet benefits such as maturity values, surrender payments, and death benefits. Understanding the relationship between fund values and policy benefits is important for accurate actuarial valuation, product management, and effective communication of investment-related risks to policyholders. This study examines the effect of policyholder fund values on unit-linked insurance benefits. The study will assess how changes in the value of policyholder investment funds influence the benefits payable under unit-linked insurance contracts. It will also examine how variations in investment performance, unit prices, charges, and policy duration affect the accumulation of fund values and the resulting benefits received by policyholders. The study will focus on factors such as unit prices, investment returns, premium contributions, policy charges, fund expenses, number of units held, and policy duration. Unit-linked insurance benefits will be assessed using measures such as maturity values, surrender values, death benefits, and accumulated policy values. Actuarial and investment valuation techniques will be applied to examine the relationship between policyholder fund values and benefit levels. A quantitative research approach will be adopted using representative unit-linked insurance policy data and relevant investment assumptions. Historical or simulated fund values, premium contributions, investment returns, unit prices, and policy charges will be analysed. Descriptive statistics, actuarial valuation techniques, scenario analysis, and sensitivity analysis will be used to assess how changes in policyholder fund values influence unit-linked insurance benefits under alternative investment conditions. The study is expected to reveal that changes in policyholder fund values have a direct effect on unit-linked insurance benefits. Higher investment returns and increases in unit prices may lead to higher accumulated fund values and consequently larger policy benefits, while poor investment performance and higher charges may reduce the value available to policyholders. The findings may also show that the impact of fund value changes becomes more significant over longer policy periods due to the cumulative effect of investment performance and charges. The study will provide useful information for actuaries, life insurance companies, investment managers, regulators, and policyholders involved in unit-linked insurance products. Understanding the relationship between fund values and benefits may support improved product design, benefit projection, investment management, actuarial valuation, and risk assessment. The findings may also assist insurers in providing clearer information about how investment performance and policy charges can affect policyholder outcomes. The study concludes that policyholder fund values are an important determinant of benefits under unit-linked insurance products because changes in fund values directly affect the amount available for benefit payments. It is therefore recommended that insurers and actuaries regularly monitor fund performance, unit values, and policy charges when projecting and valuing unit-linked benefits. Appropriate management and transparent communication of fund value changes may improve benefit assessment and support the long-term sustainability of unit-linked insurance products.
