Abstract

Rainfall is one of the most important indices used in agricultural insurance because variations in rainfall can significantly affect crop growth, yield levels, and farm income. The selection of an appropriate rainfall index is therefore important for establishing reliable premium rates and ensuring that insurance contracts adequately reflect the underlying agricultural risk. This study examines the effect of rainfall index selection on parametric crop insurance pricing. The study will assess how different approaches to measuring rainfall, including cumulative rainfall, rainfall deficits, rainfall thresholds, and seasonal rainfall indices, influence the determination of insurance premiums. It will also examine the relationship between selected rainfall indices and expected crop losses to determine how index choice affects the accuracy and adequacy of parametric insurance pricing.
