Effect of Rating Class Structures on General Insurance Pricing

Abstract

Rating class structures refer to the grouping of insurance risks into categories based on similarities in their expected loss characteristics and other relevant rating factors. In general insurance, these classifications provide a basis for assigning premiums to different policyholders and exposures. The structure and accuracy of rating classes are therefore important because they can influence premium differentials, expected claim costs, and the overall fairness and adequacy of insurance pricing. The study examines the effect of rating class structures on general insurance pricing. It will assess how the organization of risks into different rating classes influences the premiums charged for general insurance policies. The study will also examine the relationship between rating classes, risk characteristics, claims experience, premium rates, and expected insurance losses. The study will focus on rating class structures, risk categories, premium rates, claims frequency, claim severity, exposure characteristics, and expected loss costs. Actuarial rating techniques will be applied to evaluate premium rates across different rating classes.
