Effect of Temperature Variability on Agricultural Insurance Loss Estimates
Abstract
Agricultural insurance provides financial protection to farmers against losses arising from adverse weather conditions, crop failures, and other agricultural risks. Temperature is an important environmental factor that can affect crop growth, productivity, and the occurrence of agricultural losses. Variations in temperature over time may therefore influence the frequency and severity of insured agricultural losses, making temperature variability an important consideration in actuarial loss estimation. This study will examine the effect of temperature variability on agricultural insurance loss estimates. It will assess how changes and fluctuations in temperature influence the expected losses associated with agricultural insurance coverage. The study will also examine variations in estimated losses under different temperature conditions and determine their implications for agricultural insurance risk assessment. The study will focus on temperature variability, agricultural insurance loss estimates, crop yields, claim frequency, claim severity, insured agricultural exposure, weather conditions, and expected indemnity payments. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to assess the relationship between temperature variations and agricultural insurance losses. Historical temperature records and agricultural claims experience will be used to estimate potential losses under different temperature scenarios. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant agricultural insurance claims data, temperature records, crop yield information, insured exposure, claim amounts, and indemnity payments will be analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, regression techniques, frequency and severity analysis, and actuarial loss modelling. Scenario analysis will also be used to estimate potential insurance losses under alternative temperature variability conditions. The study is expected to reveal that temperature variability may have a significant effect on agricultural insurance loss estimates. Greater fluctuations in temperature may increase the risk of adverse effects on crop production and consequently contribute to higher expected insurance losses. The magnitude of the effect may vary according to crop type, geographical area, seasonal conditions, temperature levels, and historical claims experience. The study will be useful to agricultural insurers, actuaries, farmers, underwriters, agricultural policymakers, insurance regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving weather-related agricultural risk assessment and strengthening loss estimation practices. The findings may also support appropriate premium determination, indemnity estimation, reserve planning, and management of agricultural insurance portfolios. The study concludes that temperature variability is an important factor in estimating agricultural insurance losses. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate reliable temperature data, crop yield information, claims experience, exposure measures, and appropriate actuarial and statistical models when estimating losses associated with temperature-related agricultural risks.
