Effect of Third-Party Recovery Values on General Insurance Loss Ratios
Abstract
Third-party recovery values refer to amounts recovered by an insurer from parties responsible for or connected to an insured loss after claims have been settled or become payable. Such recoveries can reduce the net financial burden of claims borne by insurers and may therefore influence the measurement of insurance losses. The level of third-party recoveries is consequently an important consideration in evaluating general insurance loss ratios and assessing the financial performance of insurance portfolios. This study will examine the effect of third-party recovery values on general insurance loss ratios. It will assess how variations in amounts recovered from third parties influence the loss ratios reported by general insurance companies. The study will also compare loss ratios before and after third-party recoveries and determine the extent to which recovery values affect the relationship between insurance claims and earned premiums. The study will focus on third-party recovery values, general insurance loss ratios, insurance claims, claims recoveries, gross claims, net claims, earned premiums, claim payments, recovery amounts, insurer losses, claims management, and actuarial analysis. Relevant claims, premium, and recovery data will be examined to identify patterns in third-party recoveries and their relationship with general insurance loss ratios. Statistical and actuarial techniques will be applied to evaluate the financial implications of third-party recovery values. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data relating to gross claims incurred, third-party recovery amounts, net claims incurred, earned premiums, claim frequency, claim severity, and loss ratios will be analysed using descriptive statistics, recovery value analysis, claims frequency and severity analysis, loss ratio analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Alternative recovery value scenarios will be evaluated to determine their effects on general insurance loss ratios. The study is expected to reveal that third-party recovery values may have a significant effect on general insurance loss ratios. Higher recovery values may reduce net claims incurred and consequently lower the resulting loss ratio, while lower recovery values may increase the proportion of earned premiums consumed by net claims. The magnitude of the effect may depend on claim severity, recovery efficiency, responsible third parties, recovery timing, claims settlement practices, and the level of earned premium. The study will be useful to actuaries, general insurance companies, claims managers, loss adjusters, underwriters, risk managers, pricing analysts, regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving loss ratio measurement, evaluating claims recovery practices, forecasting net claims costs, assessing insurance portfolio performance, and strengthening actuarial analysis of general insurance losses. The study concludes that third-party recovery values are important considerations in general insurance loss ratio analysis because recoveries can reduce the net claims costs used in determining insurers’ loss experience. It is therefore recommended that insurers maintain accurate recovery records, incorporate third-party recoveries appropriately into claims analysis, regularly monitor recovery patterns, and conduct sensitivity analysis to support reliable loss ratio estimation.
