Abstract
Weather derivatives are financial instruments used to manage financial risks arising from adverse weather conditions that can affect agricultural production and farm income. The strike level determines the weather condition at which a derivative contract begins to generate a payout and therefore influences the cost and extent of risk protection available to agricultural producers. Understanding the relationship between strike levels and risk management costs is important for effective agricultural risk planning. This study will examine the effect of weather derivative strike levels on agricultural risk management costs. It will assess how variations in strike levels influence the cost of obtaining weather-based financial protection and determine how different strike levels affect the expected financial exposure of agricultural producers to adverse weather conditions. The study will focus on weather derivative strike levels, agricultural risk management costs, weather indices, rainfall and temperature conditions, derivative premiums, payout levels, agricultural losses, risk exposure, and contract duration. Actuarial and financial modelling techniques will be applied to estimate derivative values and expected payouts under alternative strike levels.
