Modelling Mortality Rates Using Graduation Methods

Abstract

The study examines the modelling of mortality rates using graduation methods, focusing on the application of actuarial techniques to smooth and represent observed mortality data in a systematic and reliable form. Mortality data obtained from population records or insurance experience may contain irregular fluctuations arising from random variation, data limitations, or changes in the size of observed populations. Graduation methods are therefore important in actuarial analysis because they help produce smooth mortality rates that can be used for life insurance and pension calculations. The study will investigate the application of selected graduation methods to observed mortality rates and assess their effectiveness in producing consistent mortality patterns. It will examine the differences between crude mortality rates and graduated rates across selected age groups and determine how graduation affects the representation of mortality experience. The study will also assess the usefulness of graduated mortality rates for actuarial applications. The analysis will focus on crude mortality rates, graduated mortality rates, age-specific mortality, mortality patterns, smoothing techniques, and goodness-of-fit measures. Appropriate graduation approaches, including analytical and statistical graduation methods, will be applied to mortality data to obtain smoothed estimates. The study will compare observed and graduated mortality rates and examine whether the resulting rates provide a more consistent representation of the underlying mortality pattern. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant mortality data covering selected age groups and observation periods will be obtained from appropriate secondary sources. Descriptive statistics, mortality-rate calculations, graduation techniques, goodness-of-fit tests, residual analysis, and comparative statistical methods will be employed to evaluate the graduated mortality rates and their consistency with observed mortality experience. The study is expected to reveal that graduation methods can reduce irregular fluctuations in crude mortality rates and produce smoother age-specific mortality patterns. The findings may show that different graduation techniques produce varying estimates, particularly in age groups where mortality data are sparse or highly variable. The study is also expected to demonstrate that appropriately graduated rates can provide a more consistent basis for actuarial calculations than unadjusted crude mortality rates. The findings are expected to provide useful information for actuaries, life insurance companies, pension administrators, demographic researchers, and other users of mortality data. Effective graduation of mortality rates may support more reliable mortality tables, improved life insurance valuation, pension calculations, annuity pricing, and actuarial risk assessment. The study may also assist practitioners in selecting appropriate graduation methods based on the characteristics and quality of available mortality data. The study concludes that graduation methods provide an important framework for modelling mortality rates and reducing random irregularities in observed mortality experience. It is therefore recommended that actuaries and other users of mortality data apply appropriate graduation techniques, evaluate the resulting rates using suitable statistical tests, and regularly update graduated mortality tables to reflect changes in observed mortality patterns.
