Effect of Admission Counselling on Enrolment Decisions among Adult Learners

Abstract

Admission counselling refers to the guidance and support provided to prospective adult learners to help them understand available educational programmes, admission requirements, programme expectations, and learning opportunities, while enrolment decisions refer to the choices adults make concerning whether, where, and in which programme to register for further education. Clear and appropriate counselling can help prospective learners obtain relevant information and make informed educational choices. However, uncertainty about admission requirements, programme suitability, costs, duration, and learning expectations may influence adults’ decisions to enrol. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of admission counselling on enrolment decisions among adult learners. Admission counselling involves providing prospective learners with accurate information about available programmes, entry requirements, course content, duration, learning schedules, costs, and available educational support. Counsellors may also listen to prospective learners’ educational interests, explain programme options, answer questions, and assist them in evaluating alternatives. Effective counselling can reduce uncertainty and help adults understand the implications of different enrolment choices before committing to a programme. Enrolment decisions among adult learners involve the process of considering educational options and deciding whether to register for a particular adult education programme. These decisions may involve evaluating programme relevance, admission requirements, cost, duration, location, learning schedules, and expected benefits. Admission counselling can influence these decisions by providing prospective learners with useful information and helping them develop a clearer understanding of available options. Consequently, the quality and relevance of admission counselling may affect adults’ willingness and readiness to enrol. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will consist of prospective and newly enrolled adult learners in selected adult education programmes within the study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on admission counselling and learners’ enrolment decisions. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of admission counselling on enrolment decisions. The study is expected to establish that admission counselling has a significant effect on enrolment decisions among adult learners. Adults who receive clear and relevant admission counselling are expected to demonstrate greater confidence in evaluating programme options and making decisions to enrol. The findings may also indicate that access to accurate information about admission requirements, programme content, costs, duration, and learning arrangements reduces uncertainty and encourages prospective learners to make more informed enrolment choices. The findings will have implications for adult education by emphasizing the importance of effective counselling services during the admission process. Adult education providers can strengthen admission counselling by ensuring that prospective learners receive accurate, accessible, and understandable information about available programmes. Counsellors can also use individual and group guidance sessions to help adults clarify their educational interests and assess available programme options before making enrolment decisions. The study will be beneficial to prospective adult learners, adult education counsellors, programme administrators, adult educators, learning centres, and policymakers. Prospective learners may benefit from improved access to information that supports informed educational choices, while counsellors and administrators may gain insight into areas where admission guidance can be strengthened. Adult education providers may also use the findings to improve admission procedures and make educational opportunities easier for prospective learners to understand and evaluate. The study will recommend that adult education providers should establish effective admission counselling services that provide prospective learners with timely and accurate information about programme requirements, content, costs, duration, schedules, and available support. Counsellors should provide individualized guidance where necessary and ensure that prospective learners have opportunities to ask questions before making enrolment decisions. The study concludes that effective admission counselling can contribute to informed and appropriate enrolment decisions among adult learners by reducing uncertainty and improving understanding of available educational opportunities.
