Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Ethical Issues in Everyday Situations

Abstract

Ethical issues arise in everyday situations when individuals are required to consider questions of right and wrong, fairness, responsibility, honesty, respect, and the possible consequences of their actions. The ability to identify such issues enables adults to recognize situations that require ethical consideration before making decisions or taking action. Adult Education can provide adults with knowledge and critical-thinking skills that support the recognition and examination of ethical concerns in their daily lives. This study therefore examines the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to identify ethical issues in everyday situations. Adult Education can expose learners to fundamental concepts of ethics, including values, principles, responsibilities, fairness, honesty, respect, and accountability. Through discussions, case studies, role-play activities, problem-solving exercises, and analysis of everyday situations, adults can develop greater awareness of how ethical issues emerge in personal, family, workplace, and community interactions. These learning experiences can encourage learners to examine situations from different perspectives and consider the responsibilities associated with different choices. Such educational activities may strengthen adults’ ability to recognize ethical concerns that might otherwise be overlooked. The ability to identify ethical issues involves recognizing situations in which values, responsibilities, rights, fairness, or other ethical considerations may be involved. Adults need to distinguish an ethical issue from an ordinary disagreement or personal preference and understand when a situation requires careful consideration of appropriate conduct. Adult Education can strengthen this ability by providing learners with practical situations that require them to identify the ethical concerns involved and explain why those concerns are important. Improved ethical awareness can support more responsible behaviour and decision-making in everyday interactions. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment of participants’ ability to identify ethical issues in everyday situations. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on the identified ability. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to identify ethical issues in everyday situations. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to recognize ethical concerns, identify the values or responsibilities involved, and distinguish ethical issues from ordinary personal disagreements. The expected findings may further indicate that practical discussions and analysis of everyday ethical situations improve adults’ awareness and confidence when dealing with situations that require responsible judgment. The findings are expected to have implications for the content and delivery of Adult Education programmes. Adult Education practitioners may need to integrate practical ethics-related activities into learning programmes so that adults can apply ethical concepts to situations encountered in everyday life. Case discussions, role-play, group analysis, and decision-making exercises can help learners examine different situations and recognize the ethical dimensions involved. Such activities can make ethical education more practical and encourage learners to develop greater awareness of responsibility and appropriate conduct. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, programme planners, community organizations, researchers, families, and other stakeholders interested in promoting responsible decision-making. It may provide useful evidence on the contribution of Adult Education to adults’ ability to recognize ethical concerns in everyday situations. The study recommends greater integration of practical ethical-awareness activities into Adult Education programmes, with emphasis on identifying and discussing ethical issues arising in personal, workplace, and community settings. It concludes that strengthening adults’ ability to identify ethical issues can contribute to more thoughtful judgment, responsible conduct, and constructive participation in everyday life.
