Abstract
Pseudoscientific claims are statements presented as scientific explanations or evidence-based conclusions without adequate scientific support, reliable evidence, or appropriate methods of verification. The ability to identify such claims is increasingly important because adults encounter information through social media, advertisements, public discussions, online platforms, and other communication channels. Adult Education can provide adults with the critical knowledge and analytical skills needed to examine claims carefully and distinguish scientifically supported information from claims that only appear scientific. This study therefore examines the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to identify pseudoscientific claims. Adult Education can expose learners to important principles of evidence evaluation, scientific reasoning, source assessment, and critical information analysis. Through structured lessons, discussions, practical exercises, and examination of different information claims, adults can learn to consider the evidence supporting a statement rather than relying solely on technical language or the authority presented by its source. Learning activities may also help adults recognize unsupported explanations, exaggerated claims, misleading presentations of evidence, and statements that cannot be adequately verified. Such educational experiences can strengthen adults’ ability to approach questionable information with greater caution. The ability to identify pseudoscientific claims requires adults to examine the quality of evidence, the methods used to support a claim, the credibility of the source, and whether the conclusion is consistent with available evidence. Adults who lack these skills may find it difficult to recognize claims that use scientific terminology without providing adequate scientific support. Improved competence in this area can support more responsible information use and decision-making. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to identify pseudoscientific claims. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while reliability will be established before administration. Data obtained will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on the identified ability. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to identify pseudoscientific claims. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to examine supporting evidence, question unsupported assertions, assess information sources, and recognize claims that lack adequate scientific support. The expected findings may further indicate that research literacy, critical reasoning, and evidence-evaluation activities within Adult Education programmes can improve adults’ confidence and competence in evaluating questionable information. The findings are expected to have implications for the content and delivery of Adult Education programmes. Adult Education practitioners may need to incorporate practical activities that expose learners to different types of scientific and pseudoscientific claims and guide them in examining the evidence behind each claim. Discussions, case analysis, source comparison, and evidence-evaluation exercises can provide practical opportunities for adults to develop stronger analytical skills. These activities may also help learners become more cautious about accepting information simply because it is presented using scientific-sounding language. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, programme planners, community organizations, researchers, and other stakeholders concerned with improving adults’ ability to evaluate information. It may provide useful evidence on the role of Adult Education in strengthening adults’ capacity to recognize unsupported claims and engage more critically with information encountered in everyday life. The study recommends greater integration of critical reasoning, research literacy, and evidence-evaluation activities into Adult Education programmes. It concludes that strengthening adults’ ability to identify pseudoscientific claims can contribute to more careful information evaluation and more informed decision-making.
