Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Safe Meeting Points during Emergencies

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning activities designed to provide adults with relevant knowledge, skills, and competencies, while the ability to identify safe meeting points during emergencies refers to adults’ capacity to recognize and select suitable locations where household or community members can gather safely after leaving a hazardous area. Identifying appropriate meeting points is an important component of emergency preparedness because it can support organized movement, accountability, and communication during emergencies. However, inadequate knowledge of suitable meeting locations may result in confusion and unsafe decisions. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to identify safe meeting points during emergencies. Adult education can provide learners with knowledge about the characteristics and purposes of emergency meeting points, including accessibility, distance from hazards, ease of identification, and suitability for gathering affected individuals. Through discussions, demonstrations, visual materials, practical exercises, and scenario-based activities, adults can learn how to assess potential meeting locations and distinguish safer areas from unsuitable ones. Such educational activities can strengthen adults’ understanding of the considerations involved in selecting appropriate emergency meeting points. The ability to identify safe meeting points involves recognizing potential hazards, assessing the suitability of locations, understanding designated gathering areas, and selecting places that provide a reasonable level of safety during emergencies. Adults who receive relevant emergency preparedness education may be better equipped to recognize appropriate meeting points and understand why particular locations are preferable. The study will therefore investigate whether adult education contributes to improved ability to identify safe meeting points among adults. The study will adopt an appropriate research design, such as a descriptive survey or quasi-experimental design, depending on the study setting. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire, location-identification task, or practical assessment designed to measure adults’ ability to identify safe meeting points. The data obtained will be analysed using suitable descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that exposure to adult education improves adults’ ability to identify safe meeting points during emergencies. Adults who receive relevant instruction are expected to demonstrate better understanding of hazard-free gathering locations, designated assembly areas, accessibility considerations, and appropriate location-selection principles. These expected findings would highlight the contribution of adult education to strengthening practical emergency preparedness skills. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of emergency preparedness in adult education programmes. Adult educators can incorporate maps, photographs, demonstrations, community-based scenarios, group activities, and practical location-identification exercises into lessons. These approaches can help learners apply theoretical knowledge to realistic situations and develop greater confidence in recognizing suitable emergency meeting points. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, households, community organizations, workplaces, educational institutions, and emergency preparedness authorities. Adults may gain improved knowledge for identifying appropriate gathering locations, while educators may obtain useful information for developing more practical emergency preparedness lessons. Community and organizational stakeholders may also use the findings to strengthen preparedness education and promote organized gathering procedures during emergencies. The study recommends that adult education programmes should include practical instruction on identifying and evaluating safe emergency meeting points. Learning activities should use realistic examples, visual materials, maps, demonstrations, and community-based exercises to reinforce understanding. Adults should also be encouraged to become familiar with designated gathering locations relevant to their households, workplaces, or communities. The study concludes that effective adult education can improve adults’ ability to identify safe meeting points and contribute to more organized and informed responses during emergencies.
