Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Sampling Errors

Abstract

Adult education can play an important role in developing adults’ ability to understand and evaluate information obtained from surveys, studies, and other forms of data collection. Sampling errors may occur when a selected sample does not adequately represent the population being studied, potentially affecting the accuracy and interpretation of research findings. Adults who lack basic knowledge of sampling may find it difficult to recognize situations in which sampling procedures could produce misleading results. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to identify sampling errors. Adult education can provide learners with practical knowledge of populations, samples, sampling procedures, sample selection, and factors that may affect the quality of collected data. Learning activities may include examining simple sampling scenarios, comparing different sample-selection approaches, identifying unrepresentative samples, and discussing how sampling decisions can influence research findings. Practical exercises can help adults understand common problems associated with sample selection and develop greater awareness of sampling errors. Adults’ ability to identify sampling errors refers to their capacity to recognize problems in the selection or composition of a sample that may affect the reliability or representativeness of findings. This ability requires adults to examine how participants are selected and determine whether the sample appropriately reflects the population of interest. Adult education is expected to improve this ability by strengthening learners’ understanding of sampling concepts, data evaluation, analytical reasoning, and research interpretation. The study will adopt a suitable quantitative research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom a representative sample will be drawn. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a sampling-error identification assessment containing realistic sampling situations for participants to examine. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to identify sampling errors. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to relevant adult education demonstrate improved ability to identify sampling errors compared with those with limited exposure to such education. Participants are also expected to demonstrate greater ability to recognize inappropriate sample-selection procedures, identify potential problems with sample representation, and understand how sampling decisions may affect the interpretation of findings. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education by highlighting the importance of basic research and data-evaluation skills in adult learning programmes. Educators can use simple survey examples, sampling scenarios, group discussions, and practical classification activities to help learners identify potential sampling errors. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, educators, community facilitators, workplace learners, researchers, and individuals who encounter survey and research findings in everyday settings. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical activities on basic sampling concepts and the identification of sampling errors. Educators should provide learners with realistic sampling situations and encourage them to examine how samples are selected and whether they adequately represent the population being studied. It is concluded that adult education can improve adults’ ability to identify sampling errors and contribute to more careful interpretation and evaluation of research information.
