Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Interpret Electricity Consumption Information

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning activities designed to provide adults with relevant knowledge, skills, and competencies, while the ability to interpret electricity consumption information refers to adults’ capacity to understand and correctly make meaning from information presented on electricity bills, meters, statements, or other consumption records. The ability to interpret such information is important because it can help adults understand household electricity usage, monitor consumption patterns, and make informed decisions about energy use. However, limited knowledge of electricity consumption information may make it difficult for adults to understand their household energy records. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to interpret electricity consumption information. Adult education can expose adults to information about electricity units, consumption readings, billing periods, charges, meter information, and other relevant details contained in electricity consumption records. Through demonstrations, examples, practical exercises, discussions, and instructional materials, adults can learn how to identify and interpret important information presented on electricity bills and consumption records. Such educational activities can improve familiarity with energy-related terms and help learners understand the relationship between electricity usage and recorded consumption information. The ability to interpret electricity consumption information involves identifying relevant figures, understanding units of measurement, distinguishing consumption information from charges, recognizing billing periods, and making meaning from electricity records. Adults who receive relevant educational instruction may develop greater competence in understanding and interpreting such information. The study will therefore investigate whether adult education contributes to improved ability to interpret electricity consumption information among adults. The study will adopt an appropriate research design, such as a descriptive survey or quasi-experimental design, depending on the study setting. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire, interpretation test, or practical assessment based on electricity consumption information. The data obtained will be analysed using suitable descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that exposure to adult education improves adults’ ability to interpret electricity consumption information. Adults who receive relevant instruction are expected to demonstrate better understanding of electricity units, consumption readings, billing periods, recorded usage, and related information. These expected findings would highlight the importance of practical adult education in developing adults’ ability to understand everyday electricity information. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of functional numeracy and practical information interpretation within adult education programmes. Adult educators can incorporate sample electricity bills, meter readings, practical calculations, visual materials, and guided interpretation exercises into lessons. These approaches can help learners connect classroom knowledge with everyday household experiences and improve their confidence in handling electricity consumption information. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, households, adult educators, energy educators, community organizations, and institutions involved in consumer and energy education. Adults may develop improved skills for understanding electricity consumption records and making informed household energy decisions. Educators and community organizations may also use the findings to develop practical learning activities that address common difficulties adults experience when interpreting electricity information. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical lessons on interpreting electricity consumption information, with emphasis on units, consumption readings, billing periods, charges, and other commonly presented details. Sample bills, meter information, demonstrations, and practical exercises should be used to strengthen learning. Community-based energy-literacy activities should also be encouraged to make electricity information easier for adults to understand. The study concludes that effective adult education can improve adults’ ability to interpret electricity consumption information and support more informed household energy management.
