Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Set Personal Learning Goals
Abstract
Adult Education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies that support personal development and continuous learning. Personal learning goals are specific learning outcomes that individuals establish for their own educational growth, skill development, or knowledge acquisition. The ability to set personal learning goals is important because it gives adults clear direction, helps them identify learning priorities, and encourages purposeful engagement in educational activities. However, some adults may experience difficulties in identifying realistic learning needs and translating them into clear personal goals. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to set personal learning goals. Adult Education provides learning experiences that can help adults understand the principles and processes involved in establishing personal learning goals. Through discussions, practical exercises, guided activities, self-assessment, and individualized learning tasks, adults can learn how to identify areas requiring improvement, determine desired learning outcomes, and formulate realistic goals. These approaches can also help learners understand the importance of setting clear priorities and establishing achievable targets based on their individual learning needs and circumstances. Adults’ ability to set personal learning goals refers to their capacity to identify what they want to learn or improve and formulate clear, realistic, and achievable goals to guide their learning activities. This ability involves recognizing personal learning needs, determining desired outcomes, establishing priorities, and defining appropriate targets. Adults who can set meaningful personal learning goals are better positioned to organize their educational efforts and direct their attention toward specific learning outcomes. Adult Education can therefore provide the knowledge and practical experiences required to strengthen this ability. The study will adopt a quantitative research approach using a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education and continuing learning programmes. An appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to assess adults’ exposure to Adult Education and their ability to set personal learning goals. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures, while the collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics and relevant inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to set personal learning goals. Adults exposed to relevant educational experiences are expected to demonstrate improved abilities to identify learning needs, establish clear priorities, formulate realistic goals, and define achievable learning targets. The study may further indicate that practical goal-setting activities enable adults to become more purposeful and organized in determining what they intend to achieve through learning. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators may need to incorporate practical goal-setting activities into adult learning programmes to help learners identify and formulate meaningful personal learning goals. Self-assessment exercises, guided goal-setting activities, individual learning tasks, and reflective activities can provide adults with opportunities to practise establishing appropriate goals. These approaches can make adult learning more individualized and responsive to learners’ educational needs. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, continuing education providers, and administrators of adult education programmes. Adult learners may develop improved abilities to identify their educational priorities and establish clear goals for personal learning. Adult educators may gain useful information for designing learner-centred activities that encourage purposeful learning, while educational institutions may use the findings to strengthen individualized learning support and goal-setting practices within adult education programmes. The study recommends that Adult Education programmes should provide regular opportunities for adults to identify their learning needs and formulate realistic personal learning goals. Adult educators should use self-assessment, guided goal-setting exercises, individual learning activities, and progress-review exercises to strengthen learners’ goal-setting abilities. Learners should also be encouraged to review their goals periodically and make appropriate adjustments when necessary. The study concludes that Adult Education can contribute to improving adults’ ability to set personal learning goals and promote more purposeful and continuous learning.
