Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Accessible Public Facilities

Abstract

Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge that can support effective participation in community life and access to essential public resources. Accessible public facilities include public buildings, transportation points, recreational spaces, health facilities, libraries, markets, and other facilities designed or adapted to enable different members of the community to use them conveniently and safely. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of the availability, accessibility features, and appropriate use of public facilities within their communities. This study will examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of accessible public facilities. The study will determine whether participation in Adult Education can improve adults’ ability to identify accessible facilities, recognize relevant accessibility features, and understand how such facilities can be appropriately accessed and used. Adult Education can provide structured opportunities for adults to learn about public facilities through community discussions, information sessions, practical activities, demonstrations, and facility-based learning. Learning activities may introduce participants to different types of public facilities and explain features that support accessibility, such as ramps, accessible entrances, appropriate pathways, seating arrangements, clear signs, accessible toilets, and other supportive features. Participants can also discuss how to obtain information about available facilities and how to identify accessibility provisions when visiting public spaces. These learning experiences can make information about accessible facilities more practical and relevant to adults’ everyday needs. Adults’ knowledge of accessible public facilities refers to their ability to identify facilities that provide accessibility features, recognize those features, understand their purpose, and obtain information about accessing relevant public resources. This knowledge is important because awareness of accessible facilities can help adults make informed choices when seeking public services, participating in community activities, or supporting individuals who require accessible environments. Limited knowledge may prevent adults from identifying suitable facilities or making effective use of available accessibility provisions. Adult Education may therefore contribute to improved knowledge by providing clear, practical, and community-relevant information about accessible public facilities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ understanding of accessible public facilities and their features. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of accessible public facilities. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of accessible public facilities. It is anticipated that adults exposed to structured learning activities will demonstrate improved ability to identify accessible facilities, recognize common accessibility features, explain their purposes, and identify appropriate ways of obtaining information about facility access. The study may also establish that visual materials, community discussions, practical examples, and facility-based learning activities can improve adults’ understanding of accessibility provisions and their relevance to community participation. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, facility managers, public service providers, and organizations concerned with inclusive community development. Adult Education programmes may incorporate practical activities that help adults identify accessibility features and understand how different public facilities can accommodate diverse users. Community mapping, guided discussions, visual learning materials, and facility-based activities can make learning more practical and enable adults to connect accessibility information with facilities within their communities. Such approaches may strengthen awareness and encourage more informed use of public resources. The study will be significant to adult learners, community members, Adult Education practitioners, public facility managers, service providers, and policymakers by providing information on the contribution of Adult Education to knowledge of accessible public facilities. Based on the expected findings, it will be recommended that Adult Education programmes include relevant information about accessibility features, available public facilities, and appropriate access procedures. The study will conclude that Adult Education can contribute meaningfully to improving adults’ knowledge of accessible public facilities and supporting more informed, inclusive, and effective participation in community life.
