Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Basic Bricklaying Techniques

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical construction knowledge and skills that can support vocational development, employment, and participation in building activities. Basic bricklaying involves knowledge of bricks, mortar, measurements, laying procedures, alignment, bonding, joint formation, and safety practices. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of appropriate bricklaying techniques because of inadequate access to structured practical education. This study therefore examines the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of basic bricklaying techniques. Adult education programmes can provide practical learning through demonstrations, guided instruction, discussions, illustrations, and supervised hands-on activities. In bricklaying, adults can learn to identify suitable materials, prepare mortar, measure and mark work areas, position bricks correctly, maintain proper alignment and spacing, form appropriate joints, and observe safe working procedures. These activities can enable adults to develop practical understanding through direct observation and guided practice. Adults’ knowledge of basic bricklaying techniques refers to their understanding of brick materials, mortar preparation, tools, measurements, laying procedures, alignment, bonding, jointing, and safety practices. Adequate knowledge is important because inaccurate measurements, poor mortar preparation, improper brick placement, uneven alignment, and weak joints can affect the quality and stability of masonry work. Adult education may therefore improve adults’ knowledge through structured instruction and practical learning experiences. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of basic bricklaying techniques. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of basic bricklaying techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of brick selection, mortar preparation, measurement, brick placement, alignment, bonding, joint formation, and safety procedures. Practical demonstrations and supervised activities may further strengthen adults’ understanding and retention of bricklaying knowledge. The study will conclude that adult education can effectively improve adults’ knowledge of basic bricklaying techniques. It will recommend that adult education programmes provide appropriate bricklaying tools and materials, practical demonstrations, supervised hands-on activities, and relevant safety guidance. Strengthening these learning opportunities can enhance adults’ practical construction knowledge and support their participation in building, maintenance, and vocational activities.
