Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Basic Hairdressing Techniques

Abstract

Adult education provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical vocational knowledge and skills that can support self-employment, livelihood development, and personal development. Basic hairdressing techniques refer to the fundamental methods and procedures used in caring for, styling, arranging, and maintaining hair. Knowledge of these techniques is important because appropriate hairdressing practices require understanding of hair preparation, tool selection, basic styling methods, hygiene, and safe handling of equipment. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of basic hairdressing techniques. Adult education can introduce adults to basic hairdressing through practical demonstrations, guided instruction, hands-on activities, visual materials, and supervised practice. Learning activities can expose participants to hair preparation procedures, basic combing and sectioning methods, simple styling techniques, appropriate use of hairdressing tools, and basic hair-care practices. Adults can also learn about maintaining cleanliness and observing safety precautions when using hairdressing equipment and products. Practical learning experiences can make the techniques easier to understand and encourage learners to apply acquired knowledge in realistic situations. Adults’ knowledge of basic hairdressing techniques involves their understanding of fundamental hair preparation, sectioning, combing, styling, tool selection, hair-care, hygiene, and safety procedures. It also includes the ability to identify appropriate tools and understand their basic uses in carrying out different hairdressing activities. Adequate knowledge can help adults perform simple hairdressing tasks more confidently and appropriately. Adult education may therefore strengthen this knowledge by combining explanations with demonstrations, guided practice, and opportunities to observe and apply basic techniques. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, vocational, and community-based hairdressing learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of basic hairdressing techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of basic hairdressing techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of basic hairdressing techniques. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of hair preparation, sectioning, combing, basic styling, tool selection, hair-care practices, hygiene, and safety procedures. The study is also expected to indicate that demonstrations and supervised practical activities can strengthen adults’ understanding of fundamental hairdressing techniques and improve their confidence in applying the acquired knowledge. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, vocational instructors, hairdressing trainers, community learning facilitators, and programme developers. Adult education programmes should incorporate practical hairdressing activities that allow learners to observe techniques, handle appropriate tools, and practise basic procedures under guidance. Facilitators should also emphasize hygiene, safe tool handling, proper hair preparation, and appropriate care practices to ensure that learners develop useful and responsible vocational skills. The study will be significant to adult learners, aspiring hairdressers, vocational training providers, community organizations, and other stakeholders interested in livelihood and skills development. It will recommend that Adult Education programmes provide accessible and practical learning opportunities in basic hairdressing through demonstrations, guided practice, visual resources, and supervised activities. The study will conclude that appropriately structured adult education can improve adults’ knowledge of basic hairdressing techniques and strengthen their capacity to apply fundamental hairdressing practices effectively.
