Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Basic Sewing Techniques
Abstract
Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support household activities, vocational development, and livelihood opportunities. Basic sewing techniques are fundamental skills used in garment construction, clothing maintenance, alterations, and other textile-related activities. These techniques include threading needles, making basic stitches, joining fabric pieces, securing seams, hemming, and carrying out simple finishing processes. However, some adults may have inadequate knowledge of these techniques, limiting their ability to participate effectively in sewing activities. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of basic sewing techniques and determine how structured learning experiences can improve their understanding of fundamental sewing practices. Adult education can provide practical learning experiences through demonstrations, guided practice, discussions, illustrations, and hands-on activities. In sewing-related programmes, adults can be introduced to different basic techniques and guided through the correct sequence of performing simple sewing tasks. Learning activities may include demonstrations of stitch formation, seam joining, hemming, thread handling, needle use, and basic garment finishing. Repeated practice and constructive feedback can help learners understand the correct procedures and develop greater familiarity with sewing techniques. Knowledge of basic sewing techniques involves understanding the purpose, procedure, and appropriate application of fundamental sewing practices. Adults need to know how different stitches and techniques are performed and when particular methods are suitable for specific sewing tasks. Adequate knowledge can support effective garment construction, clothing repair, alterations, and maintenance. Adult education may therefore contribute to improved sewing knowledge by combining theoretical explanations with practical demonstrations and opportunities for supervised practice. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and vocational learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of basic sewing techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of basic sewing techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of basic sewing techniques. It is expected that adults exposed to structured learning activities will demonstrate improved understanding of basic stitches, seam construction, hemming, threading procedures, and simple garment-finishing techniques. The findings are also expected to indicate that practical demonstrations and repeated hands-on exercises can strengthen learners’ understanding and confidence in applying basic sewing techniques to appropriate clothing-related tasks. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, vocational instructors, sewing facilitators, and skills-development programme developers. Learning programmes should incorporate practical demonstrations, guided sewing exercises, visual instructional resources, and supervised practice sessions. Providing learners with opportunities to repeatedly practise basic techniques can make learning more meaningful and enable adults to connect acquired knowledge with practical garment construction, clothing repair, and household sewing activities. The study will be significant to adult learners, vocational training providers, sewing practitioners, community skills programmes, and stakeholders interested in practical skills development. It will recommend that adult education programmes provide adequate sewing materials, appropriate equipment, and sufficient practical learning opportunities for adults to develop fundamental sewing knowledge. The study will conclude that well-organized adult education can improve adults’ knowledge of basic sewing techniques and strengthen their ability to apply these techniques in practical, household, and vocational activities.
