Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Block-Making Techniques

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support vocational development, employment, and participation in building-related activities. Glass installation involves knowledge of glass types, installation tools, measurements, framing materials, surface preparation, fitting procedures, and appropriate safety practices. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of proper glass installation techniques due to inadequate access to structured practical learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the impact of adult education on adults’ knowledge of glass installation techniques. Adult education programmes can provide practical and experience-based learning through demonstrations, guided instruction, discussions, illustrations, and supervised activities. In glass installation, adults can learn about different types of glass, basic installation tools, accurate measurement, preparation of installation areas, handling and positioning of glass, fitting procedures, sealing, and appropriate safety practices. These learning activities can help adults relate theoretical explanations to practical experiences and develop a better understanding of the procedures involved in glass installation. Adults’ knowledge of glass installation techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, measurements, procedures, and safety practices required for carrying out basic glass installation activities. Adequate knowledge is important because inaccurate measurements, improper handling, poor fitting, unsuitable sealing, and inadequate safety practices can affect the quality of installation. Adult education may therefore improve adults’ knowledge by providing structured learning experiences, practical demonstrations, and opportunities to observe and practise appropriate installation procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of glass installation techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult education on adults’ knowledge of glass installation techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of glass installation techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of glass selection, measurement, tool identification, preparation of installation areas, glass handling, fitting, sealing, and safety practices. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised activities enhance adults’ ability to understand and retain knowledge of glass installation procedures. The study will conclude that adult education can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of practical glass installation techniques. It will recommend that adult education and vocational programmes provide appropriate tools and materials, practical demonstrations, supervised hands-on activities, and adequate safety guidance. Strengthening these learning opportunities can improve adults’ practical knowledge, support vocational skill development, and enhance their ability to apply appropriate glass installation techniques effectively.
