Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Ceiling Installation Techniques

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can improve their participation in vocational, household, and income-generating activities. Ceiling installation is an important construction and building-finishing activity that requires knowledge of ceiling materials, tools, measurements, positioning, fixing procedures, alignment, and appropriate safety practices. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of proper ceiling installation techniques due to inadequate access to structured practical learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of ceiling installation techniques. Adult education programmes can provide practical and experience-based learning through demonstrations, guided instruction, discussions, illustrations, and supervised activities. In ceiling installation, adults can learn about different ceiling materials, identification and use of installation tools, measurement of ceiling spaces, preparation of surfaces and supporting structures, material positioning, fixing procedures, joint treatment, and finishing. These learning activities can enable adults to relate theoretical explanations to practical experiences and develop a clearer understanding of the procedures involved in ceiling installation. Adults’ knowledge of ceiling installation techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, measurements, procedures, and safety practices required for effective ceiling installation. Adequate knowledge is important because inaccurate measurements, improper positioning, unsuitable fixing methods, poor alignment, and inadequate finishing can affect the appearance, stability, and durability of a ceiling. Adult education may therefore improve adults’ knowledge by providing structured instruction, practical demonstrations, and opportunities to observe and practise appropriate installation procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of ceiling installation techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of ceiling installation techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of ceiling installation techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of ceiling materials, installation tools, measurement procedures, positioning, fixing methods, alignment, joint treatment, finishing, and relevant safety practices. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised activities enhance adults’ understanding and retention of knowledge relating to ceiling installation. The study will conclude that adult education can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of ceiling installation techniques. It will recommend that adult education and vocational programmes provide adequate installation materials and tools, practical demonstrations, supervised hands-on activities, and relevant safety guidance. Strengthening these learning opportunities can improve adults’ practical knowledge, support vocational skill development, and enhance their ability to apply appropriate ceiling installation techniques effectively in construction, household, and income-generating activities.
