Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Local Cultural Festivals

Abstract

Local cultural festivals are important expressions of community identity, heritage, traditions, beliefs, history, and social values. They provide opportunities for communities to preserve cultural practices, strengthen social interaction, and transmit knowledge from one generation to another. Adults require adequate knowledge of the origins, activities, meanings, symbols, and traditional practices associated with local cultural festivals in order to appreciate and support their continuity. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire cultural knowledge through discussions, community activities, demonstrations, cultural events, and experience-sharing. This study therefore examines the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of local cultural festivals. Adult Education can expose adults to information about the historical background, purposes, activities, symbols, costumes, music, dances, ceremonies, and traditional practices associated with local festivals. Through community-based learning activities, cultural presentations, storytelling, group discussions, and direct participation in cultural events, adults can develop a deeper understanding of festival traditions. Such learning experiences can also encourage adults to interact with cultural knowledge holders and gain information about practices that may otherwise receive limited attention in everyday life. Knowledge of local cultural festivals involves understanding their origins, cultural significance, major activities, traditional practices, symbols, and roles within community life. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better able to identify important festival activities, explain their cultural meanings, recognize traditional practices, and appreciate the role of festivals in maintaining community heritage. Adult Education can strengthen this knowledge by providing structured opportunities for adults to explore local cultural traditions and relate educational content to their own community experiences. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and cultural learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of local cultural festivals. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of local cultural festivals. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of local cultural festivals. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of the history, cultural meanings, activities, symbols, and traditional practices associated with local festivals. The study may also establish that practical cultural learning approaches, including community discussions, festival observations, storytelling, and interaction with cultural knowledge holders, can strengthen adults’ understanding of local cultural traditions. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, cultural educators, community development facilitators, heritage organizations, and programme planners. Adult Education programmes may incorporate cultural discussions, festival documentation activities, community visits, storytelling sessions, and opportunities for adults to participate in local cultural events. These approaches can make cultural learning more practical and encourage adults to develop greater awareness of the cultural resources and traditions within their communities. The study is expected to be significant to adult learners, cultural practitioners, community organizations, heritage educators, traditional knowledge holders, and stakeholders interested in cultural preservation. It is recommended that relevant Adult Education programmes provide accessible learning opportunities that expose adults to local cultural festivals and their significance. The study concludes that appropriately designed Adult Education can contribute to improved knowledge of local cultural festivals and support the appreciation, preservation, and transmission of important cultural heritage.
