Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Local Weather Observation

Abstract

Local weather observation involves the ability of adults to notice, identify, and understand observable weather conditions within their immediate environment. Such knowledge can be useful in making everyday decisions related to farming, transportation, outdoor activities, community events, and other activities influenced by changing weather conditions. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge through structured learning, discussions, demonstrations, observation activities, and community-based learning experiences. This study therefore examines the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of local weather observation, with emphasis on how educational experiences can improve their ability to recognize and interpret observable weather conditions. Adult Education can expose adults to basic methods of observing weather conditions such as cloud formation, rainfall, wind direction, temperature changes, humidity, and changes in atmospheric conditions. Through practical activities, learners can be encouraged to observe their surroundings and record simple weather information over different periods. Discussions, demonstrations, observation exercises, and experience-sharing can further help adults connect formal learning with weather patterns they encounter in their communities. Knowledge of local weather observation involves the ability to recognize common weather indicators and understand what observable changes may suggest about prevailing or approaching conditions. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better able to identify differences between weather conditions, observe changes over time, and use basic observations to inform everyday decisions. Adult Education can strengthen this knowledge by providing learners with practical opportunities to examine weather indicators and relate their observations to familiar community experiences. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of local weather observation. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of local weather observation. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of local weather observation. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify observable weather indicators and recognize changes in local weather conditions. The study may also establish that practical observation exercises and community-based learning activities can make weather-related knowledge more understandable and applicable to adults’ everyday experiences. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community learning facilitators, environmental educators, and programme planners. Adult Education programmes may incorporate simple weather observation activities, group discussions, practical demonstrations, and observation records into relevant learning sessions. These approaches can help adults develop greater awareness of their immediate environment while strengthening their ability to interpret basic weather conditions and apply such knowledge to daily activities. The study is expected to be significant to adult learners, farmers, community organizations, Adult Education practitioners, and other stakeholders interested in improving environmental and weather-related knowledge. It is recommended that relevant Adult Education programmes provide practical learning opportunities that enable adults to observe, discuss, and interpret local weather conditions. The study concludes that appropriately designed Adult Education can contribute to improved knowledge of local weather observation and support adults in making more informed decisions based on observable environmental conditions.
