Abstract
Small-scale water infrastructure includes facilities and systems such as hand-operated water pumps, boreholes, storage tanks, protected wells, rainwater-harvesting systems, and small community water-supply facilities that support access to water for domestic and community activities. Adequate knowledge of these facilities can help adults understand their functions, appropriate use, basic maintenance requirements, and the importance of protecting them from damage and contamination. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge through community-based learning, demonstrations, discussions, and hands-on activities. This study therefore examines the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of small-scale water infrastructure. Adult Education can expose adults to information about the different types of small-scale water infrastructure available within communities and their basic functions. Through demonstrations and practical learning activities, adults can learn how water facilities operate, how they should be used responsibly, and the importance of routine maintenance. Learning can also introduce adults to simple practices for identifying visible faults, reporting infrastructure problems, preventing misuse, and supporting the sustainability of community water facilities. Knowledge of small-scale water infrastructure involves understanding the purpose, basic operation, appropriate use, maintenance, and protection of water facilities serving communities. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better able to identify the functions of different facilities, recognize signs of damage, use water infrastructure appropriately, and understand when technical assistance or repairs may be required. Adult Education can strengthen this knowledge by relating learning activities to water facilities that adults encounter within their communities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of small-scale water infrastructure. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of small-scale water infrastructure. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of small-scale water infrastructure. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of the functions, appropriate use, basic maintenance, and protection of community water facilities. The study may also establish that practical demonstrations and community-based learning activities are particularly useful for helping adults connect knowledge about water infrastructure with facilities available in their immediate environment. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community development facilitators, environmental educators, and water-resource programme planners. Adult Education programmes may incorporate practical demonstrations, facility-identification exercises, group discussions, and community-based activities that enable adults to learn about local water infrastructure. Such approaches can improve adults’ ability to participate responsibly in the use and protection of community water facilities while encouraging timely reporting of faults and infrastructure challenges. The study is expected to be significant to adult learners, households, community organizations, water-resource stakeholders, community development practitioners, and Adult Education facilitators. It is recommended that relevant Adult Education programmes provide accessible practical learning opportunities on the operation, use, maintenance, and protection of small-scale water infrastructure. The study concludes that appropriately designed Adult Education can contribute to improved knowledge of small-scale water infrastructure and support more responsible community participation in the sustainable use of local water facilities.
