Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Participation in Heritage Education Programmes

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities that enable adults to acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies throughout their lives, while heritage education programmes are structured educational activities designed to provide knowledge about historical sites, traditions, cultural objects, monuments, customs, and other forms of cultural heritage. Participation in heritage education programmes can help adults develop greater knowledge and appreciation of the historical and cultural resources within their communities. However, limited exposure to relevant adult education opportunities may affect adults’ involvement in heritage-related learning. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in heritage education programmes. Adult education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge through formal, non-formal, and informal learning activities. These opportunities may include literacy classes, community learning programmes, workshops, discussions, educational visits, and other learning experiences. Through adult education, learners can develop the ability to acquire, interpret, and apply information about their social and cultural environments. Such educational experiences can provide a foundation for understanding the importance of historical and cultural resources and encourage adults to explore heritage-related learning opportunities. Adults’ participation in heritage education programmes refers to their involvement in educational activities focused on learning about and understanding cultural and historical heritage. Such participation may include attending heritage lectures, visiting historical sites, joining heritage workshops, taking part in guided educational tours, and engaging in discussions about cultural heritage. Adult education can influence this participation by providing adults with relevant knowledge, learning skills, and awareness that may encourage interest in heritage education programmes. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will consist of adults within the selected study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on adults’ exposure to adult education and their participation in heritage education programmes. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on participation in heritage education programmes. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a significant effect on adults’ participation in heritage education programmes. Adults with greater exposure to adult education are expected to demonstrate higher levels of involvement in heritage-related learning activities, including educational visits, workshops, lectures, and discussions. The findings may also indicate that adult education strengthens adults’ awareness and understanding of heritage resources, thereby encouraging greater interest in organized heritage education opportunities. The findings will have implications for adult education by highlighting the potential of adult learning to support heritage-related knowledge and educational engagement. Adult educators can incorporate local history, cultural resources, traditional knowledge, historical sites, and heritage materials into appropriate learning activities. Educational visits, discussions, storytelling, practical demonstrations, and community-based learning experiences can provide adults with meaningful opportunities to connect their education with the heritage of their communities. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, heritage educators, cultural organizations, museums, community learning centres, educational institutions, and policymakers. Adults may benefit from improved knowledge of their historical and cultural heritage, while educators may gain useful information for developing learning activities that connect adult education with heritage education. Cultural organizations and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen educational initiatives that encourage adults to engage with heritage resources. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should incorporate relevant heritage-related content and provide opportunities for adults to participate in heritage education activities. Adult educators should use educational visits, discussions, storytelling, demonstrations, and locally relevant learning materials to make heritage education accessible and meaningful. Cultural institutions and adult education providers should also collaborate in developing programmes that encourage adult participation in heritage learning. The study concludes that effective adult education can contribute to increased participation in heritage education programmes by strengthening adults’ knowledge, awareness, and interest in historical and cultural resources.
