Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies, while road safety programmes are structured educational and awareness initiatives designed to promote safer behaviour among road users and reduce the risks associated with road transportation. Participation in road safety programmes can provide adults with knowledge about traffic regulations, safe road use, hazard recognition, responsible road-user behaviour, and accident prevention. However, limited exposure to relevant educational opportunities may affect adults’ involvement in road safety education. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in road safety programmes. Adult education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge through formal, non-formal, and informal learning experiences. These may include workshops, lectures, community education, practical demonstrations, awareness sessions, discussions, and other learning activities. Through such experiences, adults can develop the ability to understand safety information, interpret road signs and regulations, recognize potential hazards, and apply appropriate safety measures. Adult education can therefore provide a foundation for greater awareness of road safety issues and encourage adults to engage with programmes designed to promote responsible road use. Adults’ participation in road safety programmes refers to their involvement in organized educational and awareness activities that provide information and practical guidance on safe road use. Such activities may include road safety campaigns, traffic safety workshops, driver and passenger education, pedestrian safety programmes, road safety talks, and practical demonstrations. Adult education may influence participation by increasing adults’ awareness of available road safety programmes, improving their understanding of safety information, and encouraging them to acquire knowledge that can support safer behaviour on the road. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults within the selected study area who use roads as drivers, passengers, cyclists, or pedestrians, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on adults’ exposure to adult education and their participation in road safety programmes. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in road safety programmes. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a significant effect on adults’ participation in road safety programmes. Adults with greater exposure to relevant educational opportunities are expected to demonstrate higher levels of involvement in road safety campaigns, workshops, awareness sessions, and other road safety learning activities. The findings may also indicate that adult education increases adults’ awareness of road safety information and encourages them to participate in programmes that provide practical knowledge about safer road use. The findings will have implications for adult education practice by highlighting the importance of incorporating road safety education into appropriate adult learning programmes. Adult educators can use practical demonstrations, visual materials, discussions, simulations, and real-life road safety situations to make learning more relevant to adults. Such approaches can help learners connect educational experiences with their daily use of roads and encourage greater interest in road safety programmes. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, road safety organizations, transport operators, community education providers, traffic safety practitioners, and policymakers. Adults may benefit from increased awareness of road safety information and greater opportunities to participate in safety education. Adult educators may gain useful information for developing relevant road safety learning activities, while road safety organizations and policymakers may use the findings to strengthen educational programmes aimed at increasing adult involvement in road safety initiatives. The study will recommend that adult education providers should incorporate relevant road safety content into appropriate adult learning programmes and create opportunities for adults to participate in road safety campaigns, workshops, demonstrations, and awareness activities. Adult educators should employ practical and participatory teaching methods that make road safety information accessible and meaningful. Collaboration between adult education providers, road safety organizations, transport operators, and community institutions should also be encouraged. The study concludes that effective adult education can promote greater participation in road safety programmes by improving adults’ awareness, understanding, and interest in road safety education.
