Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Bystander Intervention

Abstract

Adult Education can play an important role in developing adults’ understanding of how they can respond appropriately when they witness situations involving harm, harassment, abuse, or other forms of inappropriate behaviour. Bystander intervention involves actions taken by a person who observes a concerning situation and chooses to respond in a manner intended to prevent harm, support affected individuals, or encourage appropriate assistance. Adults may witness such situations in homes, workplaces, learning environments, and communities, making awareness of appropriate intervention approaches important. Adult Education can provide knowledge that helps adults understand their responsibilities, available response options, and the importance of considering safety when responding to concerning situations. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of bystander intervention. Adult Education can expose learners to concepts associated with bystander intervention, including recognizing concerning situations, assessing immediate circumstances, seeking assistance, supporting affected persons, reporting appropriately, and responding without unnecessarily increasing risk. Through discussions, case studies, scenario-based activities, role-playing, and reflective exercises, adults can examine different situations in which intervention may be appropriate. Such learning experiences can help learners distinguish between helpful and potentially harmful responses and understand that intervention does not always require direct confrontation. Education can therefore provide adults with a broader understanding of safe and appropriate ways of responding when they observe potentially harmful situations. Adults’ understanding of bystander intervention refers to their awareness of what bystander intervention means, when it may be appropriate, and the different ways a person can respond when witnessing a concerning situation. This understanding includes recognizing potentially harmful circumstances, knowing that intervention can involve direct or indirect actions, and considering personal and others’ safety when deciding how to respond. Adult Education may strengthen this understanding by providing adults with opportunities to examine realistic scenarios and consider appropriate response options. Improved understanding can help adults make more informed decisions when they encounter situations requiring supportive or preventive action. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate scenario-based assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of bystander intervention. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of bystander intervention. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of bystander intervention. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate greater awareness of different forms of bystander response, appropriate circumstances for intervention, and the importance of considering safety when responding. The study may further establish that scenario-based learning and discussions help adults distinguish constructive intervention from responses that may increase risk or fail to provide appropriate support. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners in designing learning experiences that promote responsible and informed responses to concerning situations. Practitioners may incorporate case studies, scenario-based discussions, role-playing, and practical exercises that allow adults to examine different bystander responses. Such activities can help learners understand options such as seeking assistance, reporting concerns through appropriate channels, supporting affected individuals, or taking other safe actions depending on the circumstances. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, families, workplaces, community organizations, and other stakeholders concerned with violence prevention, personal safety, and supportive community participation. It is expected to recommend greater integration of bystander intervention education into relevant Adult Education programmes, with emphasis on safe, appropriate, and context-sensitive responses. The study concludes that Adult Education can contribute to adults’ understanding of bystander intervention by strengthening awareness of concerning situations, available response options, safety considerations, and appropriate ways of supporting others.
