Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Earthquake Safety Measures

Abstract

Adult education provides individuals with practical knowledge and skills that can help them understand and respond appropriately to hazards in their environment. One important area of safety knowledge is the understanding of earthquake safety measures, which involves knowing appropriate actions to take before, during, and after an earthquake to reduce exposure to danger and protect lives and property. Although earthquakes may not occur frequently in every location, understanding basic safety measures remains important for emergency awareness and preparedness. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of earthquake safety measures. Adult education can improve adults’ understanding of earthquake safety through structured lessons, discussions, demonstrations, visual materials, and scenario-based activities. Learning activities may introduce adults to basic earthquake hazards, appropriate protective actions, emergency communication, safe locations, evacuation considerations, and measures for reducing potential household risks. Practical demonstrations and realistic examples can help learners understand how safety measures should be applied during different stages of an earthquake event. Understanding earthquake safety measures enables adults to recognize appropriate actions that may help reduce risks during an earthquake. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better able to identify safer responses, understand the importance of protecting themselves from falling objects, recognize potentially dangerous situations, and follow appropriate emergency instructions. Adult education may therefore strengthen this understanding by providing relevant safety information and opportunities for learners to apply earthquake-safety concepts to realistic situations. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and an earthquake-safety knowledge assessment covering selected safety measures and response situations. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of earthquake safety measures. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of earthquake safety measures. Adults who participate in relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of appropriate protective actions, emergency procedures, and basic household safety measures associated with earthquake situations. The study may also indicate greater confidence among adult learners in identifying appropriate safety responses when presented with earthquake-related scenarios. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of practical safety knowledge in adult education programmes. Adult educators may be encouraged to incorporate demonstrations, visual resources, emergency scenarios, discussions, and practical exercises into relevant safety lessons. Using realistic situations can help adults connect theoretical information with appropriate actions and strengthen their ability to apply safety knowledge outside the classroom. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community learning centres, disaster-risk educators, emergency-management organizations, curriculum planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may develop stronger understanding of earthquake safety measures, while educators may gain useful approaches for teaching practical hazard-related knowledge. Curriculum planners and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen disaster-safety education within adult learning programmes. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical disaster-safety education that introduces adults to appropriate earthquake safety measures. Adult educators should use demonstrations, visual materials, realistic scenarios, discussions, and participatory exercises to reinforce learners’ understanding of appropriate safety actions. It is concluded that effective adult education can strengthen adults’ understanding of earthquake safety measures and contribute to greater awareness of appropriate responses to earthquake hazards.
