Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Floral Arrangement Techniques

Abstract

Floral arrangement techniques refer to the methods used to organize and combine flowers, foliage, containers, colours, shapes, and other decorative elements to create attractive and functional floral displays. Adult education can provide adults with relevant knowledge and practical skills needed to understand and apply different floral arrangement techniques. Adequate understanding of floral arrangement is important for improving creativity, aesthetic presentation, event decoration, and opportunities for income-generating activities. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of floral arrangement techniques. Adult education can expose learners to floral arrangement through practical demonstrations, guided practice, visual learning materials, group activities, and supervised arrangement exercises. These learning activities can introduce adults to techniques such as selecting suitable flowers and foliage, preparing materials, arranging colours and shapes, balancing different elements, choosing appropriate containers, and maintaining floral displays. Practical activities can enable learners to observe arrangement procedures, practise different designs, and receive guidance on improving their techniques. Such experience-based learning can make floral arrangement concepts more accessible and relevant to adult learners. Adults’ understanding of floral arrangement techniques refers to their ability to identify, explain, and apply basic principles and procedures involved in creating floral arrangements. This includes understanding flower selection, colour coordination, proportion, balance, spacing, composition, material preparation, and appropriate arrangement methods. Improved understanding can enable adults to create more organized and visually appealing floral displays while making appropriate choices based on different decorative requirements. Adult education is therefore expected to strengthen this understanding through structured instruction and practical learning experiences. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, vocational, hospitality, and event-decoration learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate floral-arrangement knowledge and understanding assessment designed to measure adults’ understanding of floral arrangement techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of floral arrangement techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of floral arrangement techniques. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of flower selection, colour coordination, balance, proportion, composition, material preparation, and basic arrangement procedures. The study may also indicate that demonstrations and supervised practical exercises are particularly useful in helping adults translate floral design principles into practical arrangements. Such findings would demonstrate the value of adult education in developing creative and practical skills relevant to floral decoration and related activities. The study is significant because improved understanding of floral arrangement techniques can contribute to creativity, better decorative presentation, event decoration skills, and livelihood opportunities. It is recommended that Adult Education and vocational programmes provide practical learning opportunities through demonstrations, visual guides, guided practice, and supervised floral arrangement projects. Educators and trainers should also expose learners to different arrangement styles and emphasize appropriate flower selection, colour coordination, balance, and composition. The study concludes that adult education can serve as an important means of improving adults’ understanding of floral arrangement techniques and supporting effective participation in floral decoration and related entrepreneurial activities.
