Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Informed Consent

Abstract

Informed consent is an important ethical principle that ensures individuals receive adequate information about a proposed healthcare procedure, treatment, or research participation and are able to make a voluntary decision about whether to proceed. Understanding informed consent enables adults to recognize their rights, the information they should receive, and the importance of voluntary decision-making. However, limited knowledge of informed consent may make it difficult for adults to understand information provided to them before agreeing to healthcare services or participation in research activities. Adult Education can provide learning opportunities that improve adults’ knowledge of informed consent and strengthen their ability to make informed choices. This study therefore examines the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of informed consent. Adult Education can introduce learners to the major elements of informed consent, including adequate information, voluntary participation, comprehension, decision-making capacity, potential benefits and risks, alternatives, and the right to ask questions before making a decision. Through structured lessons, discussions, case studies, and practical scenarios, adults can learn why informed consent is required and how it applies to different situations. These learning activities can also help learners understand the importance of receiving understandable information and making decisions without coercion or undue pressure. Such educational experiences may increase adults’ awareness of their responsibilities and rights in consent-related situations. The understanding of informed consent involves recognizing that consent should be based on sufficient information and a voluntary decision by the individual. Adults need to understand that agreeing to a procedure or activity involves more than simply signing a document and that they should have an opportunity to receive explanations and ask relevant questions. Adult Education can strengthen this understanding by helping learners examine realistic consent situations and identify important elements that should be considered before making a decision. Improved knowledge may enable adults to communicate more effectively with healthcare professionals, researchers, and other service providers when consent is required. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of informed consent. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of informed consent. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of informed consent. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of the information required for informed consent, voluntary decision-making, opportunities to ask questions, and the importance of understanding potential benefits, risks, and alternatives. The expected findings may further indicate that practical discussions and scenario-based activities improve adults’ confidence in recognizing and responding appropriately to consent-related situations. The findings are expected to have implications for the content and delivery of Adult Education programmes. Adult Education practitioners may need to incorporate practical consent-related situations into learning activities to help adults understand how informed consent operates in real-life settings. Case studies, guided discussions, role-play, and analysis of consent information can provide opportunities for learners to examine important elements of informed decision-making. Such activities may also help adults become more confident in seeking clarification and ensuring that they understand information before making consent-related decisions. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, programme planners, healthcare educators, researchers, community organizations, and other stakeholders interested in promoting informed decision-making. It may provide useful evidence on the contribution of Adult Education to adults’ understanding of informed consent and their ability to recognize important consent principles. The study recommends greater integration of informed-consent education into relevant Adult Education programmes, with emphasis on information, comprehension, voluntariness, and individual decision-making. It concludes that strengthening adults’ understanding of informed consent can support greater awareness of individual rights and more informed participation in healthcare and research-related decisions.
