Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Open and Distance Learning

Abstract

Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies that support personal, social, and occupational development. Selecting an appropriate learning programme involves identifying a programme that matches an individual’s learning needs, interests, goals, available resources, and circumstances. The ability to make appropriate programme choices is important because selecting a suitable learning opportunity can improve learners’ participation, satisfaction, and achievement. However, some adults may experience difficulties in comparing available learning programmes and determining which ones are most suitable for their needs. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to select appropriate learning programmes. Adult Education exposes adults to information and learning experiences that can improve their understanding of available educational opportunities. Through counselling, discussions, orientation activities, programme information sessions, practical exercises, and guided decision-making activities, adults can learn how to examine programme objectives, content, duration, entry requirements, learning methods, and available resources. These experiences can help adults develop a more systematic approach to comparing learning opportunities and determining their suitability for individual educational needs. Adults’ ability to select appropriate learning programmes refers to their capacity to identify, compare, and choose learning programmes that correspond with their educational goals, interests, learning needs, and personal circumstances. This ability requires adults to examine relevant programme information, consider available alternatives, assess programme requirements, and make informed choices. Adults who possess this ability are better positioned to select learning opportunities that are relevant to their developmental objectives. Adult Education can therefore provide the knowledge and practical decision-making skills needed to improve programme selection. The study will adopt a quantitative research approach using a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education and continuing learning programmes. An appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to assess adults’ exposure to Adult Education and their ability to select appropriate learning programmes. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures, while the collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics and relevant inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to select appropriate learning programmes. Adults exposed to relevant educational experiences are expected to demonstrate improved abilities to identify their learning needs, compare programme information, examine programme requirements, and choose learning opportunities that are suitable for their goals and circumstances. The study may further indicate that access to relevant guidance and educational information helps adults make more informed decisions when selecting learning programmes. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators may need to provide learners with practical activities that develop their ability to evaluate and compare different learning opportunities. Programme comparison exercises, educational counselling, orientation sessions, case studies, and guided decision-making activities can help adults develop practical programme-selection skills. These approaches can make Adult Education more responsive to learners’ individual needs and improve their ability to make purposeful educational choices. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, continuing education providers, educational counsellors, training institutions, and administrators of adult education programmes. Adult learners may acquire improved skills for evaluating available learning opportunities and selecting programmes that meet their educational needs. Adult educators and counsellors may gain useful information for strengthening programme guidance, while educational institutions may use the findings to improve the information and support provided to prospective learners. The study recommends that Adult Education programmes should provide adults with adequate information and practical guidance on selecting appropriate learning programmes. Adult educators should use programme-comparison activities, counselling sessions, case studies, and decision-making exercises to strengthen learners’ programme-selection abilities. Learning providers should also present clear information about programme objectives, content, requirements, duration, and learning arrangements. The study concludes that Adult Education can improve adults’ ability to select appropriate learning programmes and support more informed and purposeful participation in continuing learning.
