Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Workplace Diversity

Abstract

Workplace diversity refers to the presence and interaction of people with different backgrounds, experiences, abilities, perspectives, and characteristics within a professional environment. Adults’ understanding of workplace diversity involves recognizing differences among employees, appreciating the value of varied perspectives, and understanding the importance of respectful and inclusive workplace interactions. Limited understanding of diversity may contribute to misconceptions, exclusion, or difficulties in working effectively with people from different backgrounds. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of workplace diversity. Adult education can provide adults with knowledge about diversity through structured lessons, group discussions, case studies, collaborative activities, role-play, and workplace scenarios. Learners can examine different forms of diversity and explore how differences in experiences, perspectives, abilities, and backgrounds can influence workplace interactions. These educational activities can encourage adults to recognize differences positively and develop a broader understanding of the importance of respectful professional relationships. Adults’ understanding of workplace diversity involves recognizing individual differences, appreciating diverse perspectives, understanding inclusive practices, and demonstrating respect for people with different backgrounds and experiences. Adult education can strengthen this understanding by providing opportunities for learners to discuss realistic workplace situations and examine appropriate ways of interacting with diverse colleagues. Improved understanding may help adults develop greater awareness of diversity and contribute to more respectful workplace relationships. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners in the study area, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and scenario-based assessment items designed to measure exposure to adult education and adults’ understanding of workplace diversity. The instrument will be validated by experts, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of workplace diversity. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of individual differences, diverse perspectives, inclusive workplace practices, and respectful interactions. The findings may also indicate that participatory learning activities, case studies, and workplace scenarios can strengthen adults’ understanding of diversity-related issues. The study may have implications for the teaching and learning of workplace relations within adult education programmes. Adult educators may need to incorporate collaborative activities and realistic workplace situations into lessons on diversity. Discussions, role-play, case analysis, and group activities can help learners examine different perspectives and develop practical understanding of respectful interaction in diverse professional environments. The findings may benefit adult learners, adult educators, employees, employers, workplace learning providers, and organisations. Adults may develop greater awareness of diversity and become better prepared to interact respectfully with colleagues who have different experiences and perspectives. Educators may gain useful approaches for teaching workplace diversity, while organisations may benefit from employees having a clearer understanding of inclusive and respectful professional relationships. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate workplace diversity education through practical and participatory learning activities. Adult educators should use case studies, group discussions, role-play, and realistic workplace scenarios to strengthen learners’ understanding. Organisations should also provide accessible diversity education and encourage respectful interactions among employees. The study concludes that adult education can contribute meaningfully to improving adults’ understanding of workplace diversity when instruction is practical, inclusive, and relevant to workplace experiences.
