Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Understanding of Candle-Making Techniques

Abstract

Candle-making is a practical vocational activity that involves the selection of materials, preparation of wax, addition of appropriate components, moulding, cooling, and finishing to produce functional and attractive candles. Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support household activities, self-employment, and small-scale production. However, some adults may have limited understanding of appropriate candle-making techniques due to inadequate exposure to structured practical learning. This study will examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ understanding of candle-making techniques. Adult learning activities in candle-making may expose learners to different types of wax, wicks, moulds, colouring materials, fragrances, heating equipment, and other production materials. Learning activities may include demonstrations, discussions, guided exercises, material identification, wax preparation, wick placement, moulding, cooling, and finishing. Through these activities, adults can develop familiarity with the stages involved in candle production and understand the importance of appropriate techniques in achieving desirable results. Adults’ understanding of candle-making techniques refers to their ability to explain and apply the basic procedures involved in producing candles. This may include understanding material selection, wax preparation, temperature control, wick positioning, mould preparation, pouring, cooling, removal from moulds, finishing, and basic quality considerations. Effective adult learning may strengthen this understanding by connecting theoretical explanations with practical demonstrations and opportunities for repeated practice. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected vocational, craft, entrepreneurship, or adult learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a candle-making techniques understanding assessment designed to measure adults’ understanding of relevant production procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ understanding of candle-making techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning may improve adults’ understanding of candle-making techniques. Adults exposed to structured practical learning are expected to demonstrate better understanding of material selection, wax preparation, wick placement, moulding, cooling, finishing, and basic quality considerations. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations and hands-on activities are useful for helping adults understand and apply the different stages involved in candle production. The study will conclude that adult learning can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ understanding of candle-making techniques. It will recommend that adult learning programmes incorporate practical demonstrations, suitable production materials and equipment, guided exercises, and sufficient opportunities for repeated practice. Improving adults’ understanding of candle-making techniques may contribute to practical competence, vocational development, entrepreneurship, self-employment, small-scale production, and income-generating opportunities
