Effect of Adult Learning on Participation in Community Cultural Events

Abstract

Adult learning refers to organized and informal learning experiences through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values, while participation in community cultural events refers to adults’ involvement in activities such as cultural festivals, exhibitions, traditional performances, community celebrations, storytelling events, and other organized cultural gatherings. Community cultural events provide opportunities for people to interact, appreciate their heritage, and maintain cultural traditions. However, limited knowledge, changing lifestyles, and declining interest may reduce adults’ involvement in such events. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of adult learning on participation in community cultural events. Adult learning provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge through community classes, workshops, discussions, practical activities, cultural programmes, and other learning experiences. These activities can expose adults to information about local history, cultural practices, traditional values, and the significance of community cultural events. Through increased knowledge and awareness, adult learning may encourage adults to develop greater appreciation for cultural activities and become more willing to attend and contribute to community cultural events. Participation in community cultural events involves attending cultural festivals, exhibitions, traditional performances, arts and crafts displays, storytelling sessions, cultural celebrations, and other community-based events. Adult learning may influence participation by improving adults’ awareness of available cultural events and increasing their understanding of their cultural and social significance. Adults who acquire relevant cultural knowledge through learning activities may be more likely to attend such events, contribute their skills, and encourage others to participate. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure adult learning experiences and participation in community cultural events. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive effect on participation in community cultural events. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to adult learning opportunities will demonstrate higher awareness of cultural events, stronger appreciation of community cultural activities, and greater willingness to attend and participate in such events. The findings will have implications for adult education teaching and learning by demonstrating the value of connecting adult learning with community cultural experiences. Adult educators may incorporate cultural discussions, community visits, storytelling, practical demonstrations, and event-based learning into adult learning programmes. These approaches can provide learners with opportunities to apply knowledge outside the classroom while strengthening their appreciation of community cultural activities. The study will be significant to adult educators, adult learners, community leaders, cultural organizations, traditional institutions, event organizers, policymakers, and researchers. Adult educators may use the findings to develop culturally relevant learning activities, while community leaders and cultural organizations may gain useful information for encouraging adult involvement in cultural events. The study may also contribute to stronger relationships between adult education programmes and community cultural institutions. The study will recommend that adult learning programmes include relevant cultural learning activities and encourage learners to attend and contribute to community cultural events. Adult educators should use practical and community-based learning approaches to increase awareness of cultural events, while cultural organizations and community leaders should create accessible opportunities for adults to participate. Stronger collaboration between adult education providers and cultural institutions should also be encouraged. The study will conclude that effective adult learning can encourage greater participation in community cultural events and strengthen adults’ engagement with the cultural life of their communities.
