Effect of Adult Learning on Participation in Traditional Craft Education
Abstract
Adult learning refers to the process through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies through formal, non-formal, and informal learning experiences, while traditional craft education refers to organized learning through which individuals acquire knowledge and practical skills related to locally established crafts such as weaving, pottery, carving, basketry, beadwork, leatherwork, and other craft practices. Adult learning can provide opportunities for adults to acquire practical craft knowledge and develop interest in traditional skills. However, limited learning opportunities and declining interest may affect participation in traditional craft education. Therefore, this study examines the effect of adult learning on participation in traditional craft education. Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge through workshops, demonstrations, apprenticeships, community learning activities, skills-training programmes, and self-directed learning. These approaches can accommodate adults’ existing experiences and allow them to connect new knowledge with practical activities. Adult learning can also provide opportunities for learners to interact with experienced practitioners and develop skills through observation and practice. Such learning experiences may encourage adults to explore traditional craft education and develop greater interest in acquiring craft-related knowledge. Participation in traditional craft education involves adults’ involvement in learning activities designed to develop knowledge and practical competence in traditional crafts. This may include attending craft lessons, observing demonstrations, practising craft techniques, participating in apprenticeship arrangements, and engaging with experienced craft practitioners. Adults may participate more actively when learning activities are accessible, practical, relevant, and connected to their existing experiences. Adult learning can therefore provide the knowledge, confidence, and learning experiences that may encourage greater participation in traditional craft education. The study will adopt a correlational research design. The population will comprise adults who have participated in selected adult learning programmes or have access to relevant learning opportunities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure adult learning and participation in traditional craft education. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique to determine the effect of adult learning on participation in traditional craft education. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a significant effect on participation in traditional craft education. Adults with greater exposure to relevant learning opportunities are expected to demonstrate stronger involvement in craft lessons, practical demonstrations, apprenticeship activities, and other forms of traditional craft education. The findings are also expected to indicate that practical and experience-based adult learning opportunities can encourage adults to develop greater interest in acquiring traditional craft knowledge and skills. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adults. Adult education facilitators may need to incorporate practical craft activities, demonstrations, apprenticeship experiences, and locally relevant learning materials into appropriate adult learning programmes. Facilitators can also encourage experienced craft practitioners to contribute to learning activities and provide opportunities for adults to learn through observation and practice. These approaches may make learning more practical and meaningful while supporting the development of traditional craft skills. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult education facilitators, traditional craft practitioners, community learning centres, cultural organizations, programme administrators, and education planners. Adult learners may benefit from opportunities to acquire practical skills and knowledge associated with traditional crafts. Facilitators and programme administrators may gain insight into approaches for promoting practical learning, while craft practitioners may have opportunities to contribute their expertise to adult education. Education planners may also use the findings to support relevant adult learning programmes that provide opportunities for practical skills development. The study recommends that adult education institutions should provide practical learning opportunities that expose adults to traditional craft education. Facilitators should incorporate demonstrations, hands-on practice, apprenticeship arrangements, and experience-sharing activities into relevant programmes. Collaboration with experienced craft practitioners should also be encouraged to support the transfer of practical knowledge and skills. In conclusion, adult learning can provide a useful foundation for encouraging adults’ participation in traditional craft education and supporting the continued acquisition of traditional craft skills.
