Effect of Adult Learning on Workers’ Understanding of Workplace Reporting Channels
Abstract
Adult learning provides opportunities for workers to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can improve their ability to function effectively within workplace environments. Workplace reporting channels are established means through which workers communicate concerns, incidents, complaints, misconduct, safety issues, operational difficulties, or other work-related matters to appropriate individuals or departments. However, some workers may have inadequate knowledge of the correct channels to use when reporting workplace concerns, which can result in delays, miscommunication, or failure to direct issues to the appropriate authority. This study will examine the effect of adult learning on workers’ understanding of workplace reporting channels. The study will determine whether participation in adult learning activities can improve workers’ knowledge of appropriate reporting procedures and communication pathways. Adult learning can provide workers with structured opportunities to understand different workplace reporting channels through discussions, workshops, practical exercises, case studies, and workplace scenarios. Learning activities may introduce participants to formal reporting structures, supervisory channels, human resource departments, designated complaint mechanisms, incident-reporting procedures, and other appropriate communication pathways. Through practical examples, workers can learn to distinguish between different types of workplace concerns and identify the appropriate channels for communicating them. Such learning can also help workers understand the importance of providing accurate and relevant information when making workplace reports. Workers’ understanding of workplace reporting channels refers to their ability to identify appropriate reporting pathways, recognize the types of issues that should be reported, and understand the procedures involved in communicating concerns to responsible authorities. This understanding is important because appropriate reporting can support timely attention to workplace problems, improve organizational communication, and promote accountability. Workers who understand reporting channels may be better able to determine where and how to communicate different concerns without unnecessary delays or confusion. Adult learning may therefore strengthen this understanding by providing clear information and opportunities to practise identifying appropriate reporting procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise workers participating in selected adult learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure workers’ understanding of workplace reporting channels. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on workers’ understanding of workplace reporting channels. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive effect on workers’ understanding of workplace reporting channels. It is anticipated that workers who participate in structured learning activities will demonstrate improved ability to identify appropriate reporting pathways, distinguish between different workplace concerns, and understand the procedures for communicating such concerns. The study may also establish that practical case discussions, workplace scenarios, and guided exercises can help workers develop greater familiarity with reporting structures and make more appropriate decisions about where to direct work-related issues. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, workplace educators, employers, human resource personnel, and organizational managers. Adult learning programmes may incorporate practical activities that expose workers to realistic reporting situations and require them to identify suitable communication channels. Case studies, role-based exercises, reporting scenarios, and discussions of workplace procedures can make learning more relevant and help workers connect knowledge with practical workplace situations. Such approaches may strengthen workplace communication and encourage more informed use of established reporting mechanisms. The study will be significant to workers, employers, Adult Education practitioners, human resource personnel, workplace organizations, and policymakers concerned with effective workplace communication and employee development. Based on the expected findings, it will be recommended that adult learning programmes include practical education on workplace reporting channels and provide workers with regular opportunities to understand and practise appropriate reporting procedures. The study will conclude that adult learning can contribute meaningfully to improving workers’ understanding of workplace reporting channels and supporting more effective communication, accountability, and problem reporting within workplace environments.
