Effect of Agricultural Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Farm Machinery Safety

Abstract

Agricultural education refers to organized learning activities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and practical competencies related to agricultural production and safety. Farm machinery safety involves the knowledge and practices required to operate, maintain, and handle agricultural machinery in ways that reduce the likelihood of accidents and injuries. Adequate knowledge of farm machinery safety is important because adults who use tractors, harvesters, processing machines, and other agricultural equipment need to understand appropriate safety practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural education on adults’ knowledge of farm machinery safety, with the purpose of determining whether agricultural education can improve adults’ understanding of safe practices associated with farm machinery. Agricultural education can expose adults to important aspects of farm machinery safety, including proper machine operation, safety guards, protective equipment, routine inspection, maintenance procedures, safe starting and stopping practices, and appropriate responses to machinery-related hazards. Through demonstrations, practical training, workshops, field activities, and supervised learning, adults can develop greater familiarity with the safe use of agricultural machinery. Such educational activities can also provide opportunities for learners to identify unsafe practices and understand the importance of following established machinery safety procedures. Adults’ knowledge of farm machinery safety involves their ability to identify common machinery hazards, recognize appropriate safety measures, understand safe operating procedures, and identify actions that should be avoided when using agricultural equipment. Adequate knowledge can help adults make safer decisions when operating or working around farm machinery. Agricultural education may therefore strengthen this knowledge by combining relevant information with practical demonstrations and learning experiences that enable adults to apply safety principles to real agricultural situations. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected agricultural education and adult learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of farm machinery safety. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of agricultural education on adults’ knowledge of farm machinery safety. The study is expected to establish that agricultural education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of farm machinery safety. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of machinery hazards, safe operating procedures, protective measures, equipment inspection, maintenance practices, and appropriate safety precautions. The study is also expected to indicate that practical and demonstration-based agricultural education can make machinery safety information easier for adults to understand and apply. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, agricultural educators, extension personnel, farm trainers, and community development workers. Practitioners may incorporate machinery demonstrations, hazard-identification activities, safety simulations, equipment inspection exercises, and practical discussions into agricultural education programmes. These approaches can provide adults with opportunities to develop practical safety knowledge while strengthening their ability to recognize and respond appropriately to machinery-related risks. The study will be significant to farmers, farm workers, agricultural extension personnel, Adult Education practitioners, agricultural organizations, and policymakers interested in promoting safer agricultural practices. It will provide useful information on how agricultural education can strengthen adults’ knowledge of farm machinery safety and encourage responsible equipment use. The study will recommend accessible and practical agricultural education programmes that emphasize machinery hazards, safe operation, maintenance, and protective practices. It will conclude that effective agricultural education can contribute to better-informed adults and promote safer interaction with farm machinery.
