Effect of Andragogical Practices on Learning Autonomy among Adult Learners
Abstract
Andragogical practices refer to teaching approaches based on the principles of adult learning, emphasizing learners’ experiences, self-direction, relevance, problem-solving, and active involvement in the learning process, while learning autonomy refers to the ability of adult learners to take responsibility for planning, managing, monitoring, and evaluating their own learning. Learning autonomy is important in adult education because adult learners often have diverse experiences, responsibilities, and learning needs that require them to take an active role in their educational development. However, teaching practices that provide limited opportunities for learner involvement may restrict the development of autonomy. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of andragogical practices on learning autonomy among adult learners. Andragogical practices provide adult learners with learning experiences that recognize their existing knowledge, experiences, interests, and practical needs. These practices may include learner-centred instruction, collaborative activities, problem-solving tasks, experience-based learning, self-directed activities, practical assignments, and opportunities for learners to contribute to decisions concerning their learning. By emphasizing active participation and the application of knowledge to real-life situations, andragogical practices can create learning environments in which adults assume greater responsibility for their educational activities. Learning autonomy among adult learners refers to their ability to independently manage important aspects of their learning. This may include identifying learning needs, setting learning goals, selecting appropriate learning strategies, managing learning activities, monitoring progress, and evaluating learning outcomes. Andragogical practices may influence learning autonomy by giving adult learners greater responsibility and opportunities to make meaningful decisions about their learning. When learners are actively involved in learning activities and encouraged to draw upon their experiences, they may develop greater capacity to manage their own educational progress. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure the extent of andragogical practices and the level of learning autonomy among adult learners. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of andragogical practices on learning autonomy among adult learners. The study is expected to establish that andragogical practices have a positive effect on learning autonomy among adult learners. Adult learners exposed to teaching practices that recognize their experiences, encourage active involvement, support problem-solving, and provide opportunities for self-directed learning are expected to demonstrate higher levels of learning autonomy. The study may also reveal areas of andragogical practice that require greater attention to strengthen adults’ capacity to manage their own learning. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators can adopt learner-centred approaches that recognize adults as active participants rather than passive recipients of knowledge. Learning activities should provide opportunities for adults to set learning goals, contribute their experiences, solve practical problems, undertake independent tasks, and evaluate their progress. Such practices can make adult learning more responsive to learners’ needs while encouraging greater responsibility for learning. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, adult education programme coordinators, educational institutions, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from increased opportunities to develop independent learning skills, while adult educators may gain useful information for improving instructional practices. Programme coordinators and educational institutions may also use the findings to strengthen teaching approaches that support learner responsibility and independence in adult education programmes. The study recommends that adult education programmes should encourage the consistent use of andragogical practices that promote learner involvement, experience sharing, practical problem-solving, self-directed activities, and meaningful learning decisions. Adult educators should receive appropriate professional development on the application of adult-centred teaching principles. Learning environments should also provide adults with opportunities to plan, monitor, and evaluate aspects of their learning. The study concludes that andragogical practices can contribute to improved learning autonomy among adult learners by creating learning environments that encourage responsibility, active involvement, and self-direction.
