Effect of Learning Centre Accessibility on Adult Learner Participation

Abstract

Learning centre accessibility refers to the extent to which adult learning centres are physically, financially, socially, and practically accessible to adults, while adult learner participation refers to the extent to which adults enroll, attend, engage in, and continue with learning activities provided by such centres. Accessible learning centres are important for creating opportunities for adults to obtain education within environments that are convenient and suitable for their needs. However, difficulties such as inconvenient locations, inadequate facilities, limited operating hours, and restricted access to learning resources may discourage adults from participating in educational programmes. This study will examine the effect of learning centre accessibility on adult learner participation. Learning centre accessibility may involve convenient location, availability of suitable learning facilities, appropriate operating schedules, affordability of learning opportunities, accessibility of learning materials, and ease of reaching the centre. When learning centres are designed around the practical circumstances of adult learners, they may reduce barriers that prevent adults from attending educational activities. Improving accessibility can therefore create a more supportive learning environment and make adult education opportunities easier to reach and utilize. Adult learner participation involves enrollment, regular attendance, active involvement in learning activities, completion of learning tasks, and continued engagement with educational programmes. Participation is essential because consistent involvement allows adult learners to benefit from the knowledge and skills provided through education. Learning centre accessibility may influence participation by reducing physical, financial, scheduling, and resource-related barriers that could otherwise limit adults’ involvement in learning activities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected learning centres. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure the accessibility of learning centres and adult learner participation. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that learning centre accessibility has a positive effect on adult learner participation. It is expected that adult learners who have access to conveniently located, affordable, adequately equipped, and practically accessible learning centres will demonstrate higher levels of enrollment, attendance, engagement, and continued participation than learners who experience greater accessibility barriers. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in Adult Education by emphasizing the importance of creating learning environments that respond to the practical needs of adult learners. Adult educators and programme planners can consider location, scheduling, facilities, learning materials, and other accessibility factors when organizing adult education programmes. Flexible and learner-friendly arrangements may make participation easier and support more consistent engagement in learning activities. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, learning centre administrators, community education providers, educational planners, and organizations involved in adult education. Adult learners may benefit from improved access to educational opportunities, while educators and administrators may gain useful information for identifying and reducing barriers to participation. Educational planners and community organizations may also use the findings when establishing or improving learning centres for adults. The study recommends that learning centres should be located in areas that are convenient for adult learners and should provide suitable facilities, learning materials, affordable programmes, and schedules that accommodate adults’ responsibilities. Adult education providers should regularly assess accessibility barriers and make appropriate adjustments to improve learners’ ability to attend and participate. The study concludes that improving learning centre accessibility can contribute to increased participation in adult education programmes.
