Effect of Lifelong Learning Programmes on Learning Participation among Older Adults

Abstract

Lifelong learning programmes refer to organized educational opportunities that enable individuals to continue acquiring knowledge, skills, and experiences throughout their lives, while learning participation refers to the extent to which individuals engage actively and consistently in educational activities. For older adults, continued participation in learning can provide opportunities for intellectual stimulation, personal development, and meaningful engagement after retirement or reduced involvement in formal education. However, factors such as limited access to learning opportunities, lack of motivation, and age-related challenges may affect their participation. This study will examine the effect of lifelong learning programmes on learning participation among older adults. Lifelong learning programmes may include adult literacy classes, skills development, community education, continuing education, cultural learning, workshops, and other educational activities designed for adults at different stages of life. These programmes provide older adults with opportunities to acquire new knowledge, develop practical skills, explore new interests, and interact with other learners. The accessibility, relevance, flexibility, and organization of such programmes can influence the willingness of older adults to participate in learning activities. Learning participation among older adults involves their enrolment, attendance, active involvement, regular engagement, and willingness to continue participating in educational activities. Participation may be encouraged when learning programmes are relevant to the needs and interests of older adults and provide supportive learning environments. Lifelong learning programmes can therefore create opportunities for older adults to remain educationally active, develop new interests, and continue learning despite their age or previous educational experiences. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise older adults participating in selected lifelong learning programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to lifelong learning programmes and the level of learning participation among older adults. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that lifelong learning programmes have a significant positive effect on learning participation among older adults. It is expected that older adults who have access to relevant, flexible, and supportive lifelong learning programmes will demonstrate higher levels of attendance, active involvement, and continued engagement in learning activities. The study may also establish that appropriately designed learning opportunities can encourage older adults to maintain an active interest in education. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of older adults. Adult educators should adopt learner-centred approaches that recognize the experiences, abilities, interests, and learning needs of older adults. Flexible schedules, interactive teaching methods, practical learning activities, and accessible instructional materials may make lifelong learning programmes more attractive and encourage sustained participation among older learners. The study will be beneficial to older adults, adult educators, lifelong learning providers, community learning centres, educational institutions, social development organizations, and policymakers. Older adults may benefit from increased opportunities for continued education and personal development, while adult educators may obtain useful information for improving learning programmes for older learners. Organizations responsible for adult and continuing education may also use the findings to develop programmes that encourage greater participation among ageing populations. The study will recommend that lifelong learning providers develop accessible, flexible, relevant, and age-appropriate programmes that respond to the educational needs and interests of older adults. Adult educators should use participatory and experience-based teaching methods and provide supportive learning environments that encourage regular attendance and active involvement. Relevant organizations should also improve access to learning facilities, materials, and programmes for older adults. In conclusion, well-designed lifelong learning programmes can encourage older adults to remain active participants in education and continue acquiring knowledge and skills throughout later life.
