Effect of Workplace Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Accident Reporting Procedures

Abstract

Accident reporting procedures refer to the established steps through which workplace accidents, injuries, hazards, and related incidents are documented and communicated to appropriate authorities within an organisation. Workplace Education can provide adults with the knowledge required to understand when, how, and to whom workplace accidents should be reported. This study will examine the effect of Workplace Education on adults’ knowledge of accident reporting procedures, with emphasis on reporting channels, required information, documentation, prompt reporting, and appropriate follow-up. The study is motivated by the need to improve workers’ knowledge of accident reporting and strengthen workplace practices that support effective incident management. Workplace Education provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical knowledge through orientations, safety briefings, demonstrations, discussions, simulations, and other work-related learning activities. In relation to accident reporting, educational activities can expose workers to organisational reporting requirements and explain the appropriate steps to follow after an accident or workplace incident. Adults can learn about reporting forms, designated reporting personnel, communication channels, and the importance of providing accurate information. Such learning can make accident reporting procedures clearer and easier for workers to apply in actual workplace situations. Adults’ knowledge of accident reporting procedures involves their understanding of the appropriate steps, channels, responsibilities, and information required when reporting workplace accidents or incidents. Adequate knowledge can help workers recognise reportable incidents, identify the appropriate person or department to notify, and provide relevant information accurately and promptly. Workplace Education can strengthen this knowledge through practical examples and activities that allow workers to understand reporting procedures within their specific work environments. Improved knowledge may therefore encourage more appropriate responses to workplace accidents and support organisational safety practices. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected workplace education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of accident reporting procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Workplace Education on adults’ knowledge of accident reporting procedures. The study is expected to establish that participation in Workplace Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of accident reporting procedures. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate better understanding of reporting channels, documentation requirements, timing of reports, information to be provided, and appropriate follow-up procedures. The study may further establish that practical demonstrations, workplace scenarios, and participatory safety activities are useful approaches for improving adults’ understanding of accident reporting requirements. The study is expected to have implications for workplace educators, safety officers, human resource practitioners, employers, and Adult Education practitioners involved in workplace learning programmes. Educational activities may incorporate realistic accident scenarios, reporting exercises, demonstrations, and simplified reporting guides to strengthen workers’ understanding. Regular workplace education can also reinforce knowledge of organisational reporting procedures and encourage workers to respond appropriately when accidents or incidents occur. The study will be significant to workers, employers, safety personnel, workplace educators, organisations, and other stakeholders concerned with occupational safety and effective incident management. It is expected to recommend the regular integration of accident reporting education into workplace learning and safety programmes, with emphasis on practical and easily understandable reporting procedures. The study will conclude that appropriate Workplace Education can improve adults’ knowledge of accident reporting procedures and contribute to more effective workplace safety and incident-reporting practices.
