Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Knitting Techniques

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can enhance their participation in vocational, creative, and income-generating activities. Knitting is a practical craft that involves knowledge of yarn types, knitting tools, stitches, patterns, measurements, and techniques for producing different knitted items. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of appropriate knitting techniques due to inadequate access to organized learning opportunities and practical skill development. This study therefore examines the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of knitting techniques. Adult learning programmes can provide practical and experience-based learning through demonstrations, explanations, guided practice, discussions, illustrations, and supervised activities. In knitting, adults can learn how to identify and select suitable yarns, use knitting needles and other tools, make basic stitches, follow knitting patterns, maintain appropriate tension, join knitted pieces, and complete simple knitted products. These learning activities can enable adults to connect explanations with hands-on experiences and develop a clearer understanding of the processes involved in knitting. Adults’ knowledge of knitting techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, stitches, procedures, patterns, and finishing practices required for effective knitting. Adequate knowledge is important because inappropriate yarn selection, incorrect handling of knitting tools, poor stitch formation, inconsistent tension, and improper finishing can affect the quality and appearance of knitted products. Adult learning may therefore improve adults’ knowledge by providing structured practical instruction and opportunities to observe, practise, and understand appropriate knitting techniques. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of knitting techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of knitting techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of knitting techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of yarn selection, knitting tools, basic stitches, pattern interpretation, tension control, joining techniques, and finishing procedures. The findings may further indicate that demonstrations and supervised hands-on activities provide adults with effective opportunities to understand, practise, and retain knowledge of knitting techniques. The study will conclude that adult learning can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of knitting techniques. It will recommend that adult learning programmes provide adequate knitting tools and materials, practical demonstrations, guided practice, and supervised hands-on activities. Strengthening these learning opportunities can enhance adults’ practical knowledge, support creative and vocational skill development, and improve their ability to apply appropriate knitting techniques in producing useful and marketable knitted products.
