Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Understanding of Climate-Responsive Building Designs

Abstract

Climate-responsive building design refers to the planning and design of buildings in ways that respond appropriately to local climatic conditions while promoting comfort, energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and suitable indoor conditions. Adult learning can provide adults with knowledge that enables them to understand how building design interacts with factors such as temperature, sunlight, wind, rainfall, ventilation, and humidity. This understanding is important because adults participate in decisions concerning housing, workplaces, community facilities, and other buildings within their environments. However, limited knowledge of climate-responsive design principles may reduce adults’ ability to appreciate building features that improve comfort and environmental performance. This study will examine the impact of adult learning on adults’ understanding of climate-responsive building designs, with the purpose of determining whether adult learning can improve their knowledge of climate-responsive architectural practices. Adult learning provides opportunities for participants to acquire knowledge through discussions, demonstrations, observations, practical activities, and experience-based learning. In relation to climate-responsive building design, learning activities may introduce adults to concepts such as natural ventilation, building orientation, shading, daylighting, thermal comfort, appropriate material selection, and protection from excessive heat or rainfall. Participants may also examine how architectural features can influence indoor temperatures, airflow, energy consumption, and occupant comfort. Through visual examples and practical observation of existing buildings, adult learning can make climate-responsive design principles more understandable and enable adults to relate architectural decisions to the climatic conditions of their communities. Adults’ understanding of climate-responsive building designs involves their ability to identify relevant design features, explain how they respond to climatic conditions, and recognize their potential contribution to comfort, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability. Adequate understanding can help adults appreciate why certain building orientations, openings, shading devices, roof forms, materials, and ventilation arrangements may be suitable for particular environments. Adult learning can strengthen this understanding by connecting architectural concepts with familiar buildings and everyday experiences of heat, ventilation, sunlight, and rainfall. Improved understanding may therefore enable adults to participate more meaningfully in discussions and decisions concerning appropriate building designs. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of climate-responsive building designs. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult learning on adults’ understanding of climate-responsive building designs. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive impact on adults’ understanding of climate-responsive building designs. Adults who participate in relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of natural ventilation, shading, building orientation, daylighting, material selection, thermal comfort, and other climate-responsive features. The study may also establish that practical observations, visual demonstrations, and discussions based on familiar buildings contribute to better understanding of climate-responsive design principles. Such findings would highlight the value of adult learning in developing awareness of building practices that can respond appropriately to environmental conditions. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, programme facilitators, and curriculum developers. Relevant Adult Education programmes may incorporate basic concepts of climate-responsive architecture where they are connected to housing, community facilities, environmental awareness, and sustainable development. Facilitators can use photographs, building observations, diagrams, demonstrations, and community-based examples to explain how architectural features respond to climatic conditions. These approaches can help adults develop greater awareness of building designs that promote comfort, reduce unnecessary energy use, and respond appropriately to local environmental conditions. The study will be significant to adult learners, educators, homeowners, community organizations, development practitioners, architects, and other stakeholders interested in sustainable and appropriate building practices. It will provide useful information on how adult learning can strengthen adults’ understanding of climate-responsive building designs and support more informed participation in decisions concerning the built environment. The study will recommend the inclusion of relevant climate-responsive design concepts in suitable Adult Education programmes and encourage practical learning activities that connect architectural principles with everyday environmental experiences. It will conclude that strengthening adults’ understanding through adult learning can promote greater awareness of climate-responsive building practices and contribute to more environmentally appropriate community development.
