Impact of Adult Learning Programmes on Adults’ Understanding of Community water infrastructure maintenance
Abstract
Water-source protection practices are important for maintaining the quality and safety of water used for drinking, domestic activities, agriculture, and other community needs. Poor protection of water sources can expose communities to contamination and reduce the availability of safe water. Community Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge about environmental protection, sanitation, responsible waste disposal, and the prevention of activities that may contaminate water sources. This study therefore examines the effect of Community Education on adults’ knowledge of water-source protection practices, with emphasis on how community-based learning can improve awareness and understanding of appropriate measures for protecting local water sources. Community Education can provide adults with relevant information through community meetings, group discussions, demonstrations, awareness programmes, practical activities, and peer learning. Through these approaches, adults can learn about common sources of water contamination and the importance of keeping wells, streams, rivers, boreholes, and other water sources protected from harmful activities. Learning activities can also help adults understand appropriate waste management, sanitation practices, vegetation protection, and responsible use of areas surrounding water sources. Knowledge of water-source protection practices involves understanding the actions required to prevent contamination, degradation, and unsafe use of water sources. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better able to identify activities that threaten water quality and recognize appropriate practices for maintaining clean and protected water sources. Community Education can strengthen this knowledge by connecting environmental information with actual conditions within the community and encouraging adults to participate in discussions and practical activities concerning water-source protection. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Community Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of water-source protection practices. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Community Education on adults’ knowledge of water-source protection practices. The study is expected to establish that participation in Community Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of water-source protection practices. Adults exposed to relevant community learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of the causes of water-source contamination and the appropriate practices for protecting local water sources. The study may also establish that practical and participatory learning approaches are particularly useful in helping adults connect water-protection knowledge with environmental conditions and activities within their communities. The findings are expected to have implications for Community Education practitioners, environmental educators, community development facilitators, and programme planners. Community Education programmes may incorporate practical demonstrations, community sanitation activities, discussions on water contamination, and participatory environmental protection exercises. Such approaches can help adults understand their responsibilities toward local water sources and encourage greater community involvement in maintaining clean and protected water environments. The study is expected to be significant to adult learners, households, community organizations, environmental educators, water-resource stakeholders, and community development practitioners. It is recommended that Community Education programmes provide accessible and practical learning opportunities on water-source protection and encourage adults to participate actively in protecting shared water resources. The study concludes that effective Community Education can contribute to improved knowledge of water-source protection practices and support greater community awareness and responsibility toward the preservation of safe water sources.
