Impact of AI Awareness Education on Adults’ Ability to Distinguish Human and Machine-Generated Information

Abstract

AI awareness education provides adults with knowledge that can help them understand the nature, uses, and implications of artificial intelligence in everyday information environments. Human-generated information refers to content produced directly by people, while machine-generated information refers to content produced or substantially created by artificial intelligence systems and other automated technologies. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of AI awareness education on adults’ ability to distinguish human and machine-generated information. The study will focus on how structured educational experiences can improve adults’ ability to examine information and identify whether its origin is human or machine-based. AI awareness education can introduce adults to the basic concepts, applications, capabilities, and limitations of artificial intelligence. Through explanations, demonstrations, examples, discussions, and practical activities, learners can become familiar with how AI systems generate or modify different forms of information, including written, visual, and audio content. Such learning experiences may also expose adults to characteristics that can assist them in examining the source and production of information rather than accepting content solely on the basis of its appearance or presentation. Adults’ ability to distinguish human and machine-generated information involves their capacity to examine information and make an informed judgement about whether it was produced by a person or generated through an artificial intelligence system. This ability is increasingly relevant because machine-generated content can resemble human-created material in form and presentation. AI awareness education may strengthen this ability by developing adults’ understanding of AI-generated content and encouraging careful examination, source awareness, and appropriate verification before conclusions are made about the origin of information. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected AI awareness education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure adults’ ability to distinguish human and machine-generated information. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of AI awareness education on adults’ ability to distinguish human and machine-generated information. The study is expected to establish that AI awareness education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to distinguish human and machine-generated information. Adults who participate in relevant educational activities may demonstrate improved understanding of the differences between human-created and machine-generated materials and greater ability to examine information critically. The study may further establish that practical exposure to different examples of information can strengthen adults’ awareness of content origin and encourage more careful evaluation of digital materials. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, digital literacy facilitators, community learning centres, and organisations involved in technology education. Integrating AI awareness activities into adult learning programmes may provide learners with practical knowledge for navigating information environments in which human and machine-generated materials increasingly coexist. Exercises involving the examination and comparison of different information samples may also provide opportunities for adults to develop relevant evaluation skills. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, digital literacy educators, community organisations, and other stakeholders interested in promoting responsible engagement with artificial intelligence and digital information. It is recommended that AI awareness education should incorporate practical activities that expose adults to different forms of human and machine-generated information and encourage careful examination of content origin. The study concludes that AI awareness education can serve as an important avenue for improving adults’ ability to distinguish between human and machine-generated information and supporting more informed engagement with digital content.
