Impact of Aquaculture Education on Adults’ Identification of Small-Scale Aquaculture Opportunities
Abstract
Aquaculture education refers to the process of providing individuals with knowledge and skills concerning the production and management of aquatic organisms, while identification of small-scale aquaculture opportunities refers to adults’ ability to recognize feasible opportunities for engaging in fish farming and other manageable aquatic production activities. As demand for aquatic products and interest in alternative livelihood activities continue to grow, adults require relevant knowledge to identify viable aquaculture opportunities within their communities. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of aquaculture education on adults’ identification of small-scale aquaculture opportunities. Aquaculture education can expose adults to fundamental concepts such as fish production, pond and tank management, species selection, feeding practices, water-quality management, stocking, harvesting, and basic enterprise planning. Through structured learning activities, adults can examine different small-scale production systems and understand the resources, skills, and conditions required for their operation. Such education can also help learners become familiar with locally appropriate aquaculture activities and the factors that influence their feasibility. Adults’ identification of small-scale aquaculture opportunities involves their ability to recognize suitable aquatic production activities based on available resources, skills, facilities, market conditions, and environmental circumstances. Adults with relevant aquaculture knowledge may be better positioned to identify opportunities that are appropriate for their circumstances and distinguish potentially feasible activities from those requiring resources beyond their capacity. Improved identification can therefore support informed consideration of aquaculture as a livelihood and enterprise-development option. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to identify small-scale aquaculture opportunities. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of aquaculture education on adults’ identification of small-scale aquaculture opportunities. The study is expected to establish that aquaculture education has a positive impact on adults’ identification of small-scale aquaculture opportunities. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate improved ability to recognize suitable aquaculture activities and assess basic conditions associated with small-scale production. The study may also reveal that practical aquaculture knowledge strengthens adults’ awareness of available production systems and opportunities for developing aquatic enterprises. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners and programme developers. Incorporating aquaculture education into adult learning programmes can provide opportunities for learners to examine different production systems, identify locally relevant aquaculture activities, discuss basic resource requirements, and explore potential enterprise opportunities. Practical learning experiences may strengthen adults’ ability to connect aquaculture knowledge with livelihood development and informed enterprise decisions. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, prospective aquaculture entrepreneurs, community organisations, agricultural extension stakeholders, and policymakers interested in livelihood development. It is recommended that adult education programmes should incorporate practical aquaculture education covering small-scale production systems, species selection, basic management practices, resource requirements, market considerations, and opportunity identification. The study concludes that effective aquaculture education can improve adults’ ability to identify small-scale aquaculture opportunities and support informed consideration of aquaculture as a viable livelihood and enterprise option.
