Impact of Argument Analysis Education on Adults’ Ability to Evaluate Claims
Abstract
Argument analysis education is an important aspect of adult learning that can develop adults’ ability to examine statements, assertions, and arguments before accepting or rejecting them. Adults encounter different claims through conversations, advertisements, workplace communication, news reports, social media, and other information sources. Without adequate analytical skills, adults may accept claims without carefully considering the reasons and evidence supporting them. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of argument analysis education on adults’ ability to evaluate claims. Argument analysis education involves teaching adults how to identify the major components of an argument and examine the relationship between them. These components may include claims, reasons, evidence, assumptions, and conclusions. Through guided discussions, practical examples, argument-identification exercises, and analysis of everyday statements, adults can learn how to examine the strength and relevance of information presented in support of particular claims. Adults’ ability to evaluate claims refers to their capacity to examine assertions by considering the evidence, reasons, relevance, consistency, and logical support provided for them. Effective evaluation requires individuals to determine whether available information adequately supports a claim rather than relying solely on personal opinions or impressions. Argument analysis education is expected to strengthen this ability by developing adults’ critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and evidence-evaluation skills. The study will adopt a suitable quantitative research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom a representative sample will be drawn. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a claim-evaluation assessment containing realistic arguments and claims for participants to analyse. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of argument analysis education on adults’ ability to evaluate claims. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to argument analysis education demonstrate improved ability to evaluate claims compared with those with limited exposure to such education. Participants are also expected to demonstrate greater ability to identify relevant evidence, examine supporting reasons, recognize unsupported assertions, and determine whether conclusions are adequately supported by the information provided. Such improvements may contribute to more careful and reasoned decision-making. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education by highlighting the importance of practical analytical reasoning activities in adult learning programmes. Educators can use everyday arguments, advertisements, workplace communication, news statements, and other realistic examples to help learners practise evaluating claims. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, educators, community facilitators, workplace learners, and individuals who regularly encounter claims that require careful examination. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical argument analysis activities that enable adults to identify claims, examine supporting reasons, assess evidence, and evaluate conclusions. Educators should provide realistic exercises that encourage learners to question unsupported assertions and make judgments based on relevant evidence. It is concluded that argument analysis education can improve adults’ ability to evaluate claims and promote stronger critical reasoning and informed engagement with information.
