Impact of Assertiveness Training on Adults’ Ability to Communicate Personal Limits
Abstract
Personal limits refer to the boundaries individuals establish around their time, choices, responsibilities, communication, and interactions with others. The ability to communicate these limits clearly is important for maintaining respectful relationships and making decisions that reflect personal needs and preferences. However, some adults may experience difficulty expressing limits because of fear of disagreement, pressure from others, uncertainty about appropriate language, or lack of confidence. Assertiveness Training can provide adults with practical communication skills for expressing their needs, preferences, concerns, and boundaries clearly while maintaining respect for others. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Assertiveness Training on adults’ ability to communicate personal limits. Assertiveness Training introduces adults to principles of confident and respectful self-expression, including direct communication, appropriate tone, active listening, respectful disagreement, and clear expression of needs. Through role-playing, demonstrations, guided discussions, and practical communication exercises, adults can learn how to state their limits without unnecessary aggression or passive acceptance. Training may also expose learners to techniques for saying no, requesting changes, expressing discomfort, and responding appropriately when their stated limits are challenged. These learning experiences can help adults develop greater confidence and consistency in communicating their personal limits. Adults’ ability to communicate personal limits refers to their capacity to clearly express what they are willing or unwilling to accept in particular interactions or situations. This may involve communicating preferences, declining inappropriate requests, requesting personal space, stating acceptable forms of communication, or explaining limits concerning time and responsibilities. Assertiveness Training may strengthen this ability by helping adults develop confidence in direct self-expression and appropriate interpersonal communication. When adults can communicate their limits clearly, they may be better positioned to participate in relationships and social interactions in which their choices and preferences are understood. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to communicate personal limits. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Assertiveness Training on adults’ ability to communicate personal limits. The study is expected to establish that Assertiveness Training has a positive impact on adults’ ability to communicate personal limits. It is anticipated that adults exposed to assertiveness training will demonstrate greater confidence in expressing their preferences, declining unwanted requests, stating areas of discomfort, and communicating acceptable boundaries in interpersonal situations. The study may further establish that repeated practice through role-playing and realistic communication scenarios helps adults apply assertiveness skills more consistently and reduces uncertainty about how to communicate personal limits respectfully. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners in developing practical learning activities that strengthen adults’ interpersonal communication and self-expression. Adult Education programmes can incorporate role-playing, communication simulations, group discussions, guided practice, and reflective exercises that allow learners to rehearse ways of communicating personal limits in different situations. Such activities can help adults distinguish assertive communication from aggressive or passive responses and develop practical confidence in expressing themselves clearly and respectfully. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, families, workplaces, community organizations, and other groups interested in strengthening effective interpersonal communication. It is expected to recommend greater inclusion of assertiveness skills, respectful self-expression, active listening, clear communication, and practical boundary communication within relevant Adult Education programmes. The study concludes that Assertiveness Training can provide adults with useful knowledge and practical communication competencies for expressing personal limits clearly, respectfully, and confidently, thereby supporting healthier interpersonal interactions and more effective participation in everyday situations.
